How can I nail the "casual" steampunk look?

Is there a way?

What I mean to do is look steampunk but not quite so out of place (IE: too many props, too flashy, etc.)

I don't think it's possible, sorry. Maybe add a few steampunkish touches to your regular clothing (a pocket watch, gear-themed accesories, brown colours...) but it'd be hard to dress in a style which is based in Victorian era fashion and not being flashy. For example, your attached pic is normie clothes with steampunk accesories, but doesn't look steampunk at all.

These are just plain clothes with some random bronze accessories. There's nothing steampunk about this.

>those ugly ass flip flops and cheap accessories
just stop anon. Steampunk is ugly enough.

What you have looks great OP, especially love that bag!! :D

First you have to define what steampunk is and break it down into e components, then simplify.

Avoid modern garments and textiles such as denim, generic heels, etc.

Follow the colour scheme: warm and cool browns, muted gold and brass embellishments, ivory/black/white. Subtle bits of color in jewel tones are good but nothing crazy. Leather bags and pouches, jackets

Identify the cultural period. Steam punk is what happens when coal powered steam never ends up evolving into electricity, at least not in the normal sense. It's all based on Victorian steam powered machines. So, you're going to want to use primarily Victorian men's wear with some woman's wear elements, mostly middl class working clothes if you don't want to stand out.

Don't make the mistake of gluing gears to everything: a good word of advice is every gear or propeller should be functional or at least serve a specific design purpose.

With pic related, I don't think it's going to work. Your palette is okay and the jewelry is subtle enough but jeans and a tee won't cut it. The flip flops are also a hard pass, you'd be better off with a semi gladiator sandal because it looks older but even that will look shit.

Minus the gun and replace cape with a scarf

Add nice tights or thicker ones. A nice bag and bracelet would complete this look.

please just let steampunk die
