Colossalcon OHIO!!!!

It's coming... Why is there no thread yet!?!
>>
does kalahari have rooms on hold that they will release like most resorts do for these cons?
>>
>>9433254
No. You are pretty SOL if you didn't book.
>>
I've been going since the first year at the Kalahari, but this will be the first time I'm not going. Too crowded to really have much fun anymore, so I'm opting for East instead.

>>9433254
Nope. Alternatively, if you really wanted to risk it and have a second option, you could hold off until the last half of May and keep calling for any cancellations. Since Colossal's one of those "mad rush to book" cons which means its prone to last minute cancellations. You can also use the "Colossalcon room & ride sharing group" on facebook because sometimes people who cancel will post there looking to transfer their room if they can't make it.
>>
>ohio
thats why
>>
Cuz it's not as exciting anymore. Half my friends can't go because the Kalahari books in a minute and driving there from another hotel is a nightmare. It's really a shame that this con is in the middle of nowhere.
>>
>>9433784
Why not just sleep in your car or camp?
>>
>>9433784
I had high hopes for Colossalcon East but they plunked it down on the shittiest weekend imaginable. Not only does it overlap with multiple very popular east coast cons, but it's right after school starts up for a lot of universities. I'm hoping they find a better weekend for next year.
>>
>>9433305
>>9433784
If i can't book the Kalihari for 2018 this might be my last Colossalcon and I should be more upset about that but i'm not. Colossal bearly passes as a con. I'll give them points for being creative in the guest department. Meeting JTRO last year was dope. Overall it's meh. The programming is meh. Most the cosplays are repetitive and meh, and their photoshoot rules are sooo stupud. Their dealers is meh. Their staff is horrible. The overcrowding is unadressed because they keep getting money. It's the only con that I just party at. I dont even bother to make colossal specific cosplay the last few years because it has become so bad. I go because everyone i know goes but i'm not going to be heart broken if i can't in the future.
>>9433876
A) that sounds horrible in June.
B) that's illegal
C) they check because you arent the first to think that.
>>9433903
I hope they don't spoil East like they did with Colossalcon Ohio. I want to go but i want to hear how year one went first.
>>
>>9433058
LOOKING FOR A ROOM.

WILL PAY BANK CASH!!!
>>
>>9433975
1 did it last year
2 they don't check lol
3 it's not horrible bc I'm only in my car from 2 am to 8 at the most....

Lol I get laid so much at these cons. It's wonderful.
>>
this was going to be our last year at colossal, due to crowding and the fact that its near impossible to get a room. We managed to snag a room off the con block, but it was so expensive most of the people in our group just couldn't afford it, and the size of the room meant no stuffing.

we canceled that reservation and got one for colossalcon east instead.

I love colossal and have been going since the year before it moved to kalahari and i'm gonna miss it a lot. but its just not worth standing in line saturday at the con to try and get a room. i'd rather enjoy my time with my friends.
>>
>>9434061
Well they are going to a call in system like everyone else. Not that the switch board won't crash as soon as reservations open. But no more line. That's something.
>>
>>9434049
I'm sure whatever whore you snagged was excited when you took her back to your '94 Honda Civic.
>>
>>9434078

They did have call ins this year too, my and my boy friend called hundreds of times right when the they were supposed to start taking calls. By the time we finally got a call thru, they only con block rooms they had to offer were thursday and sunday. But yeah, its better than nothing to get a shot.
>>
I'm lucky to have relatives that live 20 minutes away but I don't have the funds to go. Honestly just looks like an ego stroking, half naked orgy with girls out of everyone's league and smelly basement dwellers, but I do love me water parks.
>>
>>9434080

Lol you really think I didn't rent a nice ass van with a bed and TV in the back.

Step up pleb. You're talking to buff Magikarp here....
>>
>>9434172
In addition, the only time I'm back at the van is smashing and smoking. The rest of the time I'm at parties bc everyone loves me and invites me to their room bangers..

Stay salty loser
>>
>>9434172
>>9434174
I really enjoy watching lonely nerds make up and post their wildest fantasies. It's almost precious.
>>
>>9434277
I'll be there Friday and Saturday for sure...

Come tell my 5'11" 207lb ass those bitch comments to my face.

Lmfao. I might be a nerd, but I'm also a scholar and an athlete.
>>
>>9434325
wtf is this copypasta level shit. Post body shots with timestamp as proof then
>>
And as always, the Coleslawcon thread divebombs right into a landfill at breakneck speed.
>>
Every fucking year with the dudebros douches and the Colossalcon pissing contests. I hate that this con attracts these losers in droves.
>>
Has anyone stayed at the Maui Sands? I booked there because it was pretty cheap, but now I'm seeing some horror stories and I'm wondering if I should cancel my reservation.
>>
>>9437126
Yeah dude set your reservation on fire. Bad news.
>>
Eh, i heard the programming director got fired and they have some little tech shit taking over, so I can guarantee that the panels are going to be effective shit now.

Coupled with overcrowded hallways of dude Bros and professional cosplay wannabes, colossal is worthless now.
>>
>>9437294
Set the con on fire. Bad news.
>>
>>9437294
He probably got smashed like he always does and fucked something up. He was an alright guy but he couldn't do the job, he failed so hard.
>>
>>9437271
Is it really that bad? I'm not looking for 5 stars or anything, I'm just not looking to go home with bed bugs.
>>
>>9437339
Probably because that man-child of a con chair got mad because that guy was trying to make that shit con better, and decided to can him. Seems to happen a lot at colossal
>>
>>9437351
Cockroaches are the problem with this one but I doubt bed bugs are improbable.
>>
>>9433058
They waitlisted me for artist alley but their promoters at all the other cons I go to keep leaving their flyers on my table and it just makes me real salty
>>
I'm going to be attending for the first time! I got a super cheap AirBNB for the weekend that is right on the lake and has a full kitchen, I don't know whether I'm more excited about that or the convention. How fucked am I for driving from 20 minutes away and trying to find parking? Any advice?
>>
>>9437416
Just kill yourself now so you don't have to feel the pain of parking at the Kalahari
>>
>>9437339
Take everything on /cgl/ with a grain of salt but I heard it was because multiple women on staff came forward about sexual harassment from him. Tbh I'm not surprised.

Programming was more than just him running the show, but idk how much of a hand everyone else had in it so I'm a little worried about how it'll go this year.

How can someone not have any ounce of self-awareness.
>why don't you sleep in your car?
Cause that shit is sad, my guy.
>>
i might be there visiting family. is the lolita tea party worth going to?
>>
>>9437703
Lol I mean yea sure. But I haven't been able to get a room!
>>
>>9437949
Then don't be a poorfag and go to Colossalcon East where they have rooms? Or idk make friends?
>>
>>9437974
Sooo... Definitely not a poorfag... As I said early on I'm a scholar....

I waited in line two years and they ran out of rooms both times.
>>
>>9437294
They were shit before. I'm never going run a panel there again after the av "help" we got. We had to do the panel with a single working mic and no projections.
>>
>>9437982
Yeah, same here. That Mike Powell jackass refused to help our sound issues, telling us to "deal with it, I'm too busy" even though it was their shitty mics that were broken. We have to shout the entire panel and it killed my throat.

Is that the tech guy taking over programming? If so panelists are fucked
>>
>>9437630
That's what I'm wondering. The few girls I actually know on staff there say he was awesome and always went above and beyond to help other departments while making the programming run smoothly. Who knows, this guy had the lingesttrack record for colossal at least. Seems like that fat con chair fires people all the time because he feels threatened or something. Happened to those two and the Greg guy previous.

I feel like colossal is slowly turning out to be a waste of a trip
>>
>>9437351
>>9437358

I work in hospitality and bed bugs are a problem at every hotel in the country, it's just the nature of cross contamination. I always, always check my room before opening luggage or unpacking, doesn't matter if it's a shitty local place or the Ritz.
>>
>>9438111
Tips on finding bed begs or making sure your room is clean please!!!
>>
>>9437536
lol fuck
>>
>>9438159
Vanswolebro here....

As long as you don't mind walking 100yards to get into the resort, you're good. The outside rim of the parking lot always has spots
>>
>>9438122
Look a long matress sides and tops for black spots. Also check floor boards. If you find a lot those they are blood marks. That is their poop. If you find the bugs themselves they look like apple seeds. If they have eatten they will be larger and full of blood. If bitten you'll get round red spots that itch a lot. They like backs and ankles a lot.

Please report to your hotel immediately. Please quarantine you stuff in plastic garbage bags. Check your clothes and bags for bugs. They travel on people. They cant fly. So it's up to you to not spread them. If ypu have bed bugs please don't go back to the con. If you find them in your home a week after the con contact your hotel and prove it is their fault. Extermination is expensive and you'll lose a lot of your stuff. Thanks to AMW i have all this useful knowledge.
>>
>>9438161
I don't mind that at all. I regularly walk about 30 minutes to work anyway, long walks are fine as long as there is parking somewhere!
>>
>>9438240

Also if you can lift up the mattress and check between the mattress and box spring. Staining is pretty distinctive. They have roundish, flat bodies and vary in size - largest ones about the side of a ball on a straightpin. Many hotels now encapsulate their mattresses with BB covers under the fitted sheet, which is best practice so don't be concerned if you see that as long as there's no bugs or stains. Key is to check first thing so you can get the hell out of the room if it's suspicious - if you take them home you have to launder or throw away anything fabric which for a cosplayer is a nightmare.
>>
>>9438252
I have literally never had a problem finding a spot. Granted sometimes it IS in BUFU... Still on Kalahari property tho.
>>
>>9438255
god that's nightmarish
>>
>>9438262

Yep!!! Now imagine that in your fabric stash.

ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ROOMS
>>
>>9438161
Try getting in on Saturday anytime between 10am and 9pm, it'll take you 30 minutes to find anything anywhere. Happened to me two years in a row now.
>>
>>9438266
Honestly I could even deal with throwing out my fabrics and cosplays...it'd be heartbreaking but I lost 90% of my cosplay stuff in a basement flood a few years ago so I already know how to deal with a loss like that. But having to throw out my wonderful soft mattress, clothes, blankets, etc. on top of all my cosplay stuff would be devastating. Once you have bedbugs you can pretty much kiss all fabric in your house goodbye.
>>
>>9438267
I mean. I got there at 11 on Saturday last year... And was there the whole week in 2015....

Though I get what you're saying.... At the same time it's like saying
"Well if you drive at 5 o clock you will hit traffic, so all traffic is bad there"
>>
>>9437982
>>9438069
Yeah, that's the exact guy who is taking over programming lol.

>>9438080
The word was Greg was fired due to some sort of alcoholism related issues. At least that was the big stink in a thread from a while back where Greg himself popped in to defend his honour.

Colossal seems to have some big issues with inconsistent department heads in some departments. At least the security team doesn't have that posturing Jason shitheel running the show anymore.
>>
>>9438289
I remember that with Greg. He's a good guy but he lets his drinking get him in trouble with personal relationships and balls get dropped. He messed something up with scheduling so they got rid of him. He still has the best gameshows in the con circuit though.
>>
>>9437126
I'm praying for you anon. I've heard mixed reviews about the place personally. Hopefully they've taken care of the cockroach issue by colossal though.

>>9434172
you sound like a really painful guy to hang with
>>
>>9438447

know what to look for because these things are actually traumatizing if you ever get them.
>>
>>9438289
>>9438294

Greg's alcoholism burned lots of bridges afterwards for unrelated stuff, but he quit because he was getting stretched too thin doing both staff and game shows, and he fucked up a lot at con during his last year there. Then he got thrown under the bus about one of the other cons they run.
>>
My group and I are staying at the Motel 6 about 4 miles down the road. How good are the Ubers/Lyfts down there, if they have any? I don't think we're planning on driving.
>>
>>9440327
I'm driving out! You guys let me crash on the floor Friday &Sat and I'll be your taxi!
>>
>>9440327
Lol no Uber or lyft out there. I did this last year. I took the local 1 dollar public bus (full of workers) to the kalahari in the morning and took a 12 dollar cab ride back
>>
>>9440327
Sandusky is too small to attract the rideshare companies, it's a dead zone for that.
>>
I am not going near a con run by people who do nothing but crap on cons (looks at Donnell and James Pyon) which are all much better than Colossalcon. Plus its too crowded.
>>
>>9440685
Donnell is an immature, jealous fat kid with money and no life, but he does put on some good shows.

Also, found out the kid's name is James Gibbs or something like that, James Lyon is a fake name. I also heard he got busting dornhave child pornography and hides in his grandparents basement so people can't find him.

Poor fag
>>
>>9440698
Autocorrect much?
>>
>>9440698
Wait, he had child pornography? That sounds like some Ryan Kopf shit there
>>
>>9440066
Greg was always creepy to me, but that Nick guy was pretty cool to us panelists. Always tried helping and fixing the shit the Tech guy was too lazy to do it.

I remember a few years back he even ran around setting up an entire panel room on his own because no one did it when they were told to.

Sucks we will have some worthless shithead as a programming head now, they could at least gave it to that fat Erica chick
>>
I can never tell if its outsiders or Colossal staff themselves trash-talk shitposting in these threads.
>>
>>9434325
>5'11"
Manlet.
>>
>>9440712
Outsiders that use to be staff? Perhaps?
>>
>>9434325
So you're a Gohan wannabe?
>>
>>9440712
I'm just a panelist, but I've had a few run ins with the staff there
>>
I'm going to possibly do the Lolita fashion show this year? Is there anything I should be aware of or worry about?
>>
>>9440758
Yeah, the head of cosplay is a sexist elitist and the fat Lolita that runs the tea party is his con fuck buddy. They are extremely judgemental and will make fun of you if your not in "perfect" loli fashion
>>
Rule 1 of /cgl/: take everything with a gain of salt.

>>9440719
It could be anyone. I'm just being flippant because I know some of the staffers are massive trolls and I wouldn't be surprised if they shitpost here for lols.

>>9440790
Bobbi is a sweetheart though? I have no opinion on Chris but he has given the con plenty of bad PR in the past. Unless they're no longer the people running the show and you're referring to someone else.

>>9440705
Apparently it's not just Powell now, it's Powell and another guy who I personally know, who has been working programming for years and runs some good panels. So, all hope might not be lost.

Part of the reason tech has been so shitty is because the people under Powell like to drink and fuck off, and part of it is also because they (and many departments) are usually understaffed at peak hours. Some of the programming staff can usually handle tech issues too, and if PJ is on shift, he's a big sweetheart and good about helping people, so ask for him if actual tech staff is MIA.

Erica runs help/info desk.
>>
>>9440790
Confirmed cos head is elitist. I can't tell you how rude he is behind people's backs. I competed a few years ago and he would compliment people's cosplays to their face and then make gagging noises once they were out of earshot. Total trash. I hate the people at this con, I staffed there enough to never ever go back, even as an attendee.
>>
>>9440917
Yeah, I've seen a few staffers shitpost, then turn around and screenshot their posts like some autistic badge of honor. I wouldn't be surprised if it were all staff just bored and getting their kicks in waiting for con to start.
>>
>>9440917
I heard that Bobbi was supposed to help some lady with an event at another con, then ended up standing the poor woman up. Sad part was that lady had cancer and was reaching out to Bobbi and the Loli community and they didn't care. So sad that she died
>>
>>9440917
I staff Colossal and it isn't all bad. Mike is a bit of a jerk, not sure who the other guy will be, but as long as it isn't James I think the programming will survive.

I heard that Erica was trying to muscle Nick out of his position for years, so I wonder if it was her that started the rumors that got Donnell all pissy. If so that sucks that she got stuck with info desk

Bobbi is a sweetheart, though a little anti-social. Her husband though is a pretty big pushover. Basically Donnell's yes man. They are okay people though
>>
>>9440994
Yeah, he told my autistic friend that his costume was retarded
>>
>>9440917
Eh, maybe I'll just stay away from the fashion show then. I'm still wearing it on the day of though, but that's just because I've worked hard to put the coord together.
>>
>>9441006
Idk where you heard this but i helped as well as donated prizes and materials for ohayos lolita crush the year before and after the girl who ran it passed from cancer. There are pics of me and three others running around to tables serving hot water for tea to about 100 people. Before you try and drag someone under the bus, at least get your facts straight.

Plus I've never been a huge fan of chris despite being cordial. You must not remember who ran the department prior to 2012.

The only things that are true is that im sadly fat an introverted/quiet to where i prob come off as antisocial if you don't know me or i dont know you and we are in passing.
>>
>>9441127
I think you are a sweetheart Bobbi. I only said anti-social to people here in case they were wondering why you don't talk much to them. I guess I worded that wrong, sorry.
>>
>>9441151
Haha np. Its one of those things where if you get me talking about something i wont shut up. But im normally more of a listener. Plus i will say something stupid if i dont think carefully about it. Thats not the first time ive heard that and it wont be the last.

The chris thing tho. Thats the first time ive heard that my fat sides are still in orbit.
>>
>>9440758
Fashion show person here. Nothing to worry about. The fashion show is a personal coordinate showcase and q and a with the audience, bear that in mind. It's fun for the people who participate. But. if you are looking for a big fancy event, this may not be to your expectations. and Id be the last person to judge anyone. Personally i just want people to have a good time and more people learn about it.

Anon who posted above is a shit stirrer. Unfortunately, colossal threads always divulge into this and its usually the same people and i wouldnt doubt they are staff, ex staff, or friends of ex staff.
>>
First time going, is it worth it buying a badge or am I better off just buying a waterpark pass? Or should I just buy both?
>>
>>9441533
You can't get into any of the con areas without a badge. They are, however selling water park passes as well as passes to use friday and saturday night (after the waterpark is technically closed but for con attendees). It was pretty lit last year. Some people are going to say the programming isn't good enough, but DESU, it's about the same level of programming I'm seeing at most conventions. Otherwise you're just limited to the waterpark and the kalahari areas up until the first badge check point. Some people are fine spending their time like that, others feel like in order to get the full experience they like going to the water park and doing things at the con.
>>
Sure is Ohayocon in here...
>>
I don't understand why people say programming here is so bad. In my experience it's the same at any Ohio con because the same people do the same stuff at all of them.

Ha, I used to, but I'm undecided on Sandusky this year because it's just getting to be too big for me and staffing last year was utter hell.

The other guy goes by Sarge. Really outgoing dark-haired guy w/ glasses who runs some of the big D&D panels when he's not on shift. He's super dedicated and loves the con immensely so I have faith in his contributions.

Dude ohayocon is garbage and has been. I can be pissed that colossalcon is getting worse thanks to the staff becoming utter shit or at least getting brave enough to show their colors. Ohayo is incompetent but Colossal is a bunch of assholes.
>>
>>9441785
lol ur right about ohayocon...

greg ayres will go to any con anywhere that isnt completely retarded

he no longer goes

do the math
>>
>>9441789

ohayocon's descent into the shitter tracks right with his departure

>>
>>9441902
No noo naw. Ohayo has been shit loooong before they booted him. He's only been gone a year. You really gonna say it's been good before then?
>>
Smells a lot like Ohayocon in here.
>>
>>9441785
For real, colossal is becoming the new ohayocon. It's staff can only shit on people and other cons so much before it loses its original purpose.

Besides, both con chairs of ohayo and colossal only care about the money they make, not the attendees. That's really how all cons operate
>>
>>9440722
Yep! Actually this year it's majin Vegeta
>>
I think it's funny that James Gibbs created Samuraicon on Donnell's Colossalcon dime to compete with Ohayocon, but Samurai was a huge flop. They had maybe 300 attendees, and considering their guests, the venue, and other costs, they probably needed another 300 attendees just to break even.
I predict Samuraicon is the next con to shut down, then A&G, then Colossal East, and eventually everyone will see Donnell's true colors and start avoiding Colossalcon. Ohayocon will get better and everyone who runs a show in Ohio is gonna get bitter about it.

>>9442056
Implying that Ohayocon ... which has been on a steady decline into the shitter can somehow pull itself out of the gutter and be better than a 20k+ attendee convention at a water park that is easily in the top 20 cons in the united state
>>
>>9442056
That honestly could happen. Ohayo hit a low but last year was actually not a garbage fire. Man I want that to happen so we can have a real con real close that can get bigger. Colossal has hit a ceiling and they'll never be bigger or better than what they are. I want a real dealer's room!
>>
>>9442141
Colossalcon is only as big as it is because of its venue, and then expanding to another Kalahari 8 hours away is just more proof that even Donnell knows he can't put on a good show, the venue is what draws attendees. Colossal literally cannot get any bigger than it is. Ohayo has a ton of room to grow.

>>9442187
All this I agree with
>>
>>9442141
Colossal has pretty much become what AP used to be, a party con. The only draw it really has anymore are the party scenes and waterpark.

The guests are the same recycled people at all nostalgia conventions, the panels haven't been good for a while [unless you like yu-gi-oh or hot pockets], and the staff are dickheads. Ohayocon is shitty, but colossal staff is par with their's as being some of the worse.

Plus with a location that they are growing out of, I don't see colossal growing much more.
>>
>>9442207
I agree. If ohayocon can just get it's cheap con chair to invest more in the experience and not just care about profits, it would have amazing potenial
>>
>>9442213
Who gives a fuck!!! It's a 20k person waterpark,drinking, partying,raving,anime con....

That is the point of the venue. It's a fucking blast!
>>

This...all of this. People *cough* Ohayo staffers *cough* just need to make up shit to defend their horrible convention and the choices and decisions (or should I say lack of) they make.

This is like babby's first troll thread. Y'all really need to step it up cause you're not fooling anyone.
>>
>>9442216
In the middle of Columbus, in January, prone to Artic Blasts and massive snowstorms, and let's see, North Market and a couple of good restaurants. Granted, the weather was nice this year but we know Ohio's weather doesn't know wtf it's doing and it's unpredictable until you get past May and even then you never know.

When it comes to panels, SUBMIT SOME. You want to have good panels at a convention? Be the person trying to provide the quality entertainment you want to see. If you don't want to, stop bitching. The thing is, a lot of people don't want to provide panels because they want to party and have a good time. That's fine and good.

>>9442216
I'll agree with you here. But there's only so much it can do. You've got people in the region who come to this con because they can't go to Katsu. Then people deciding to go to Katsu instead of wasting their money, days off, or time away from school on Ohayocon. The con has been stagnant and rather stale since the late 2000's and yet the badge prices keep rising. For what? What experience does Ohayocon provide? What has it ever really provided except when conventions were far and few and sparsely spread out around the country?

At least Colossal sells out the whole damn city and they have to expand to another location with a better venue (have you seen pictures of it?) so that people can have that experience without the clusterfuck that is trying to get a room or relying on shuttles because everything is sold out.

From most people who attend both, I hear very positive things about Colossal. I hear more negative things about Ohayo. The only time I ever see anyone really bitching about staff, it's here. The population that goes on /cgl/ is minuscule compared to the people actually attending. Overall these discussions are rather irrelevant in the bigger picture, because people will keep attending and they usually attend both if not all/most of the cons in the state/region.
>>
>>9442207
>expanding to another Kalahari 8 hours away is just more proof that even Donnell knows he can't put on a good show
Colossal Ohio and East are 2 out of 6(?) cons that team runs, not counting Gibbs' Samuraicon, FAP, or 2.5. Idk how the attendance is on the other cons though.

>>9442056
>First year con
>Only 300 attendees
Oh no.

>>9442213
>[unless you like yu-gi-oh or hot pockets]
Hey the good news is there probably won't be 500 Yugioh panels as gap fillers now that Nick is gone lmao.

>>9442242
>When it comes to panels, SUBMIT SOME
^^^
Programming can only be as good as what the attendees submit. I don't really go to panels much, and I don't disagree that Colossal's panels from what I've seen can be a hit or miss, but it comes down to needing attendees to submit some quality panels and running them well enough to draw people in. Outside of attendee-run panels, I do like some of Colossal's other programming like the craft fair+flea market and the bounce house, and they seem to be trying out new ideas each year (even if they flop), so its not like they're throwing all fucks to the wind as far as programming goes.
>>
>>9442242
I do submit panels, and have been doing panels for years for both nostalgia and other Ohio cons, like ohayo and matsuri. If you've seen the schedules you can see the programming has gone down over the years. It's no longer the quality of the panel but a popularity contest.

This goes for most cons, not just colossal.

It just seems that outside of the game room that Toyko Attack sets up, what is the point of paying for a badge anymore. Parties are in the room, hot tub bar meetups and photo shoots are are the water park and outside. The only reason I know people pay for a badge is to get into the game room.

I've seen panel attendance and feedback steadily fall over the past few years, not just in some of our panels, but in almost all that I've gone too.

I wish they colossal would do something that pulls them ahead of the mundane generic "anime con programming"
>>
>>9442252
Suggest some ideas? What things do you honestly think would be something great outside of anime con programming?

But yeah, I've been attending cons for 15 years and I've noticed that at all conventions across the board. Panels used to be a rather large drawing point for a lot of people. Not sure if it's the normies/cosplay party culture that cons have gotten into since Cosplay has become a word spoken at family dinner tables or something else?
>>
>>9442252
I'm curious then...like what? What are some honest suggestions?
>>
All this Ohayo vs Colossal shit is fucking stupid.

Like, Ohayo is in January. Colossalcon is in June. If someone is seriously making a choice between these two conventions, they are prob dirt poor and not buying a badge or spending much money.

Acen vs Colossal I can see, Katsucon vs Ohayocon I can see. All I see here is a pissing contest.
>>
>>9442242
>At least Colossal sells out the whole damn city.
It's Sandusky that isn't that amazing of a feat. Also they share that weekend with bikers so lets settle down. I still dont believe they have a block for the whole Kalahari. Why is it i see normie families back in the rooms all the time if that's true?

>>9442255
>Not sure if it's the normies/cosplay party culture that cons have gotten into since Cosplay has become a word spoken at family dinner tables or something else?

That's honestly probabaly part of it. Cons use to be a meetup place for nerds. You could confidently say "at least everyone here likes the same things" in the past. You can't do that now. So cons either need a spine or they go as generic as possible.
>>
>>9442221
Most people go to cons for the actual con and not just for partying. If I'm paying for a $60 ticket to walk around the halls and get fuck drunk why would I pay for a badge at all. Shit maybe you should just ghost and save yourself enough to buy ONE KALAHARI DRINK
>>
>>9442289
All fair points but you should keep your cups bro. The refills are cheaper.
>>
>>9442249
And you never hear anything about those other cons they run because they're not at the kalahari. They are boring, shitty, and completely generic, which is exactly what Colossalcon is if you take away the waterpark.
>>
>>9442290
I have ghosted before, but I like the raves and shit too. I want to actually see some stuff while partying and fucking lol.

I pull out about 1500 each yr to put aside to blow here lol. Most of the time I come home with a few hundred left over too.

This is drunk party guy lol
>>
>>9442316

>>
>>9442334

>>
>>9442291
>They are boring, shitty, and completely generic
Cons are a dime a dozen these days. There's few cons that aren't "generic". If a con survives at all, it's doing alright.

>>9442252
Con culture has shifted over the years from light-hearted fandom gatherings to upbeat party weekends (not just for people who drink). People want something interactive and energetic, and they return to what they know they'll enjoy. In Colossal's case people seem to tunnel on the waterpark and parties and don't put as much focus on panels and programming.

>I wish they colossal would do something that pulls them ahead of the mundane generic "anime con programming"
This is what they've been doing, though. 2-3 new events pop up each year: bounce house, knocker ball, Pixel Vixens (lol), cosfamous meetup (lol), that zombie nerf event, dodgeball, pachinko, waterpark after hours, Greg's game shows, the AoT tag thing, makeup and wig contests, attendee-run photoshoots, tea party, craft fair, flea market, and probably more I'm forgetting. Sure some of them are ridiculous and not all of them survive, but Colossal is actively trying to provide more entertainment each year. If people want more events, all they need to do is speak up and throw down suggestions, or volunteer to run events themselves.

Personally, I'd like to see people making suggestions for interactive cosplay events that aren't just contests.
>>
>>9442334
Lol not trying to troll.

I'm a financial person and I make pretty good money for 24...

>I buy probably 200$ worth of pot.
>Maybe $100 on booze
>Usually I find someone who would let me buy a bed for Friday and Saturday night for $150
>Four day pass $55
>Waterpark two days $75
>$300 on food and eating out
>$250 at all the Shoppes

>Then randomness here and there. Last year someone brought some coke to a party... So yea throw another 150 there..

That's about $1300 all in for the event?
>>
>>9442344
Yea drunk guy... I just put up a large post explaining... You pretty much got the cliff notes version anon!
>>
>>9442350

And even tho I like to party it isn't all day.

I'm pumped for some parties. Not sure of I'll get a badge, but ghosting this con is so easy. Just walk by the table on the other side of a large group and keep going, they never chase you down. Usually it's some fat guy just sitting there. But once your in your golden because they don't check at the doors.

I haven't bought a badge the last couple years and I still get in. More money for drinks

>>
>>9442706

It's god damn colossalcon.
At a god damn water park known for boozing and orgies....

The fuck you think is going to happen when a bunch of ravers, drinkers, and beach/pool cosplayers get together.

Whiny bitches.... You don't hear me complaining about all the neck beards and NEETs that attend the event to look at girls like pervs....

Let each person fucking be. As long as they aren't hurting your con experience why does it matter?
>>
>>9443280

>>
>>9443328
Friend of mine who is doing security said they are clamping down super hard on ghosting this year
>>
>>9443389
Yeah, they say that every year. Their system of only having 2-3 spots checking is so easy to get by.

Other cons that check at the door are harder, but colossal is nice because you can just slip in
>>
>>9443418
Hey so we actually had 5 last year but interesting that the perception was we only had 2-3 ... I know that on later shifts it may have dropped down ... I am actually not in charge of staffing them and I can't always vouch for the quality of folks that badge check. However, I will take this into consideration for this year. Additionally, a secondary measure to prevent ghosting this year we will be doing spot checks on folks that do not have their badges actively visible ... yeah, it sucks for people who are there with a legit badge (though they should be displayed at all times) but it is what it is.

At the end of the day if you can slip in then that is my failure and I will strive to get better and i would hope that people would support the con that they came to have a good time at instead of ghosting =/

Haha!

>>
>>9443325

>>
>>9443440
If you are actually staff i have a real question. Why did security evaporate the last few years. Colossal back in 2012 was near impossible to ghosts because of all the checkpoints around the con circle. It seems like as attendance has gone up security largely gave up. All due respect.
>>
>>9443500
What's a tripfag?
>>
>>9443506
So there have been a few transitions of leadership over the past few years. I have been in charge for the past few now and when i came in it was a mess ... we hardly had enough people, rules were real crappy, and we had some people that thought that security was a way to live out some power trippy nerd fantasy. I have changed most of that.

Now that all of that is out of the way I can work on the finer points of Ghosting, Line control, and Attendee experience ... because lets be real Security is always one of the biggest complaints at cons

Ghosts however are not attendees and there are going to be hard penalties for ghosting this year.
>>
>>9443550
What's the rates for a waterpark pass when you bought a 4 day pass?
>>
>>9443560

Someone made a newer, superior thread.
>>9443357

>>9443506
I'm gonna add to this as former security.

The purpose is to make sure attendees feel safe and comfortable and are having fun, not really to "police" people. A lot of people who join con security teams can't grasp this, and do it all for the sake of ego and superiority. I've heard tales from other cons of security raising their voices at or putting their hands on non-offending attendees.

The guy who was the sole head of security up until 2013 understood con security and made sure every member of his team understood. He stepped down because he had a kid on the way, so another guy was brought in. Security started falling apart because most of the old team had no desire to work with this posturing pissdrip who also inevitably attracted some like-minded assholes. Understaffed, badge check duty got partially relegated to Gophers, some of whom didn't really have good work ethic.

Now security is run by more than one person who knows what they're doing and is dedicated to the job (i.e. >>9443550 ) and it's fortunately on an upswing.

>>9443645
It's not so much about the locations as it is that we've had issues with volunteers being distracted by their phones or friends, or flat out leaving their posts or not showing up. The former head of security didn't really care about keeping tabs on his people (if I cut off a finger for every time he went completely MIA, I'd be down to stumps).

He causes trouble (or used to anyway) on Facebook when the Canton Palace Theater has their anime film festival and started shit about "cyber bullying" when someone he didn't like clicked on "interested" and posted a few things he disagreed with. 2006 called. Gaiaonline wants their emote back.

>>9445749
People are interested in drama like Ryan Koph and the shit that John Leigh pulled and continues to pull. For everything that the Leigh's pulled, Anime Matsuri is still going strong despite a large amount of people actually boycotting and protesting. His dirty laundry is aired in the fucking media for the whole world and every doting parent taking their hellspawn to the con to see.

A few /cgl/ frequenters might get enjoyment out of the above thread. But by and large, most of the frequenters of /cgl/ don't give a fuck about someone being a dbag as long as they have a good time at the con.

When it comes to regular attendees, a gigantic proportion of them either lurk occasionally, don't go here, don't care to, or even know about it. Sorry, but forums and boards like these are archaic and a large majority of attendees are younger and more familiar with social media. Never used a forum much less a board like this.

They're not going to care that someone running the con or running events is fat, the guy running so and so department is whiny and fucked a girl, or that some anon on cgl said so and so have a secret cp stash. Anyone with two halves of a braincell to rub together knows to not take any of what is said on an anon board like 4chan seriously unless you are painfully new. (Judging by the emote use, anon above is probably woefully ignorant of board culture)

What they care about is that the price paid for their badge is worthwhile, they get to do the things they wanted to do, and they have a great time. Which by and large a very large percentage of people do despite the obvious problems: crowding, difficulty getting a room, drunks and drunken party culture. These are legit concerns though. These are the things that make people not want to come back. These were not problems caused by staff, but rather all the result of social media and viral cosplay articles.

Welcome to the con community.

The con/cosplay community is full of people who can be all degrees of petty, vindictive, and juvenile sometimes regardless of age (you're just another example). It's something I've learned over the years and I largely keep my distance from the community. I mean you can try to misdirect and pull this "He started it!" bullshit, but all you're doing is throwing fuel on the fire by multipost bitching on a Mongolian basket-weaving board.

You do you, buddy; you do your self-indulgent tiny-fisted tantrums.

>>9444939
I was more saying that the people who are complaining about the lack of events-- despite the con introducing new events each year-- should try and suggest things. Personally I think programming+events is fine, so I don't have anything in mind myself, but would also like to see more cosplay events if people were to try and suggest things.

>>9445190
>knowing that he will be running program is a problem
It's not just Powell working the department tho. Powell was (afaik) a last-minute-scramble choice because of tech's close relations w/ programming and Nick having been shitcanned so close to con time. It's very likely department leadership will change after this year.

>>9445402
There's a better thread for that now with some actual content in the OP. Just regard this as a containment thread for Colossal's annual 4chan shitfest.

>>9445749
That's still drama, lol. In the long run it doesn't affect the con so it's best to just sit back and laugh instead of letting it frustrate you. There's been much more public staff-related drama in the past, there's been animal rights activists repeatedly trying to stir shit, yet the con still grows by hundreds or thousands per year.
>>
>>9445842
I kind of think people like participating in a con they know is run by good people with solid morals who don't hurt people in the community. The vast majority of people are ignorant to how things work behind the scenes but a lot of people really care that they're spending their money on a worthwhile representation of their community. If staff are incompetent or harassing or bad people I wouldn't want to be a part. There are very few cons that have decent people running them but it's important to a lot of people out there.
>>
>>9442289
>Most people go to cons for the actual con
Unless you're fortunate to live in an area/have money to attend nice cons, nah. Your average congoer is a teenager who goes to hang out with friends or a cosplayer who wants to look good and have pictures taken. Both of these criteria are more than accomplished by Colossal.

I mean some of my favorite panels/non-party events happen at Colossal but most decent panels are deserted bc they're not on mainstream shit. Just face it the average con goer isn't an intellectual who wants to be stimulated by engaging content or cool guests, they just wanna let their freak flag fly for a weekend.
>>
>>9446088
Most people are ignorant and don't care. But the few issues with colossal and staffers comes down to hearsay and rumors. A lot of the staff have been with the con for a very long time and continue to staff. Not saying there aren't people I'd like to throttle because they throw all caution to the wind when it comes to public posts or actions. That doesn't help, but on the other hand most people don't know or would really care unless we are talking serious issues that could harm attendees. As long as they can have their yearly summer nerd party, they really don't care too much.
>>
>>9446088
>I kind of think people like participating in a con they know is run by good people with solid morals who don't hurt people in the community.
And people's personal drama with staff backed up by no evidence has little relation to this. "Well this staff member slept with my girlfriend" and "Well this staff member was shit-talking people" isn't really a moral mess that anyone else cares about, and I can guarantee you past staff have been immediately removed from the positions and barred from the con for far, far worse things.

Idk where you get this idea that everyone who runs cons needs to be 100% morally sound saints and perpetual perfect sweethearts, but if that were the case I'm pretty sure cons would cease to exist.

>The vast majority of people are ignorant to how things work behind the scenes but a lot of people really care that they're spending their money on a worthwhile

Kopf has had actual evidence of his bullshit in the form of police reports and numerous testimonies spread in all corners of the net, yet all his cons are still doing alright and I have met plenty of people who are well aware of his history yet still attend his cons because of the lack of options in that area. A child molester was profiting from Dragoncon for 13yrs, which spawned a mass call for a boycott, but that still didn't deal a huge blow to the con once Dragoncon dropped the guy, even though it didn't undo the fact that the con had been financially supporting that guy for so long.

A vast majority of people are ignorant because they really, truly, do not care unless the con is basically being run by, like, Bundy or Dahmer or someshit.

>If staff are incompetent or harassing or bad people I wouldn't want to be a part
Then don't be. Take hearsay to heart, honey, knock yourself out, just don't expect everyone else to give a shit.
>>
>>9446204
I'm the person who used to be staff and witnessed some bad shit go down. I don't have to listen to hearsay when I know firsthand how awful some of these staffers are. I like to share so that the other people who don't want to be giving their money to a greedy for-profit sinkhole can be made aware. I don't go anymore. I don't blame people who still want to go, most people don't care, but some do. That matters.
>>
>>9433058
Holy crap can we get off the staff subject!?!

Let's talk about all the sexy individuals that will be walking around!!!
>>
>>9447209
But it's so easy to talk about how horrible the is
>>
>>9446313
>I'm the person who used to be staff.
Good for you, so was I.

I've seen staff handle minor ordeals (in the past) in ways which I didn't personally agree with, but I also have seen them handle much, muuuuch more serious issues really well. They’re not “awful” people, you’re just turning high school tier personal drama into a huge moral issue.

My point is, you're fighting a losing battle. If something like a fairly well known animal rights group can try to slander the con on Facebook, Tumblr, and 4chan and not even make a dent, I doubt your insignificant ass is going to do much especially when all you're doing is groaning anonymously on 4chan.

>I like to share so that the other people who don't want to be giving their money to a greedy for-profit sinkhole can be made aware.
No, you like self-righteously blowing hot air and spewing negativity under the false pretense of doing good. If this was really about issuing a warning to help people, you wouldn't be doing it in a niche space, where people don't really take things seriously.

>>9447209
Just use the other thread for that lol. This sort of thing happens every year. You'll never get these people to stop, best you can do is ignore it if you don't like it, or call them on their shit so onlookers are less likely to believe them.

I'm beginning to think almost everyone who complains about staff at any con are just melodramatic faggots. I've been going to cons for 6 years. Usually with a large group of people I know. We never have problems with staff. Follow directions and rules and don't be an idiot.

It was proven a while ago that James Gibbs had asian child porn, some ohayocon staff guy (I think his name was Martin or something, it's been a while) posted screenshots of James' "private" facebook page on that con staff page, and it was shared all over 4chan and facebook.

It was some real creepy shit. Makes sense of he's really hiding in someone's basement.

Honestly it's kind of his fault. He keeps picking these vapid, pretty cosplay girls he finds at cons who use him for his position until they're done with him and they leave him out to dry. And wasn't his last one married and he actually fell for that?

But honestly relationship stuff has so little to do with con drama. I don't like him much either but that doesn't reflect on the con at all.
>>
>>9449746
Forget the relationship drama, did anyone see the schedule yet? Holy shit it's bad
>>
>>9450627
I thought there was a decent variety of topics that span different fandoms and interests. There's actually a few panels I'd like to attend. Usually at most cons, I might attend one because nothing else looks good. The only thing that seemed repetitive was the amount of fanfiction panels. That said, it'll probably change a bit.
>>
>>9450627
Actually I don't think it's too bad?

>No abundance of ridiculously specific social justice panels
>Lots of variety; YGO panels aren't used as filler
>Lots of panels that sound like they'll be upbeat and interactive
>>
>>9449619
James lives with his grandma in her basement. He is obsessed with young Japanese idols. He is what you get if you mix jp and r9k.

Donnell freaked out at the Tekko chairs because his shit head staffers left the TVs on in their booth all night and Donnell expected tekko to pay for it, but they wouldn't. My friend who runs another con said he wouldn't even go to the con runners breakfast, and the people from Otakon who did go made fun of him for being a bitch baby. Other cons even know Colossalcon is ran by a bunch of losers.
>>

>bitch baby
Sits on 4chan and acts like complaining here is actually going to amount to anything.
Pot calls the kettle black.
>>
>>9450967
Dude there's a ton of Q&A panels! I guess you can't tell because of how they're worded but there's way more than last year.
>>
>>9450853
There's duplicates of a few subjects. There's three Black Butler panels, two of which are q/a's, three Voltron panels and I think one of them is a q/a. Three workout panels seems redundant. And a lot of these panels seem a lot longer than they should be. Maybe they had fewer to choose from this year?
>>
>>9451302
When it comes to that, its usually lack of panels and lack of times people are able to do their panel. You get asked for days, times and schedule conflicts. Then your panel description.
>>
>>9451302
>Maybe they had fewer to choose from this year?
^
I can't see what was submitted, but having worked with the programming department before, this is always the case.

People need to keep this in mind when criticizing panel selection: panels are submitted and run by attendees. If the programming department doesn't get enough panel submissions, people request times that aren't available, or the quality and diversity of the submissions is lacking, they can't really do much about that. The lion's share of panel quality and selection lies on attendees.

>>9451256
Just to be clear, I specifically said character q&a's (in-character cosplayers), not general q&a's, in which case, no, there aren't a ton.

>Black Butler Host Club
>Ask a Nation
A returning panel, technically could count but it's supposedly run well and popular enough that getting rid of it likely isn't an option.
>The Pride of the Universe
>JJBA ask and discussion panel
Not entirely a Q&A
>Seven Deadly sins Q&A
>Questions with Ciel, Alois and Claude

I think that's it? I may be missing one or two, but considering there's probably about 200 slots on the schedule, that's not a lot.
>>
>>9451424
In other words, host the panels you want to see rather than expect someone to do it for you. If you don't want to, you can't really complain.
>>
>>9451215
You have to be 18 to use this website.
>>
>>9451494
And it's that exact mentality that gets us panelists who are fucking shit at hosting panels. Not everyone is meant to be a public speaker.
>>
>>9451568
I'm not great at public speaking either but I put a lot of thought and work into my panels. So even if I'm awful at speaking, I can muddle my way through with some interesting material. Not everyone does though. Some people are awful at speaking and putting together material.

Though seriously. you can't really bitch about the panels if there wasn't just a great selection open for every time slot.

Even if you can't run a panel, but have a good idea, you can bring it up in discussions, like what kind of panels do you want to see? Maybe someone will agree who is good at these things and will submit one.
>>
>>9451424
Colossal has always had a ridiculous amount if submissions for panels, I used to work programming with the twins and Greg, and it's always been close to 300-500+

The lack of good panels either shows
a) the con is shit and treats panelists horribly where they don't want to come back [this is the case unfortunately with many panelists I know, due to shitty tech, guest being given special treatment and running over their panel times that affects the panelists, and jerk security harassing them]
Or b) whoever made this panel schedule doesn't know what they are doing, because it looks like shit.

There are too many q&a/ask a character panels run by people who :are not: the character - Ask a Nation has been horrible for years, I'm surprised they are still trying

A bunch of 18+ panels that are all the same content it looks like

Fucking pajama parties all weekend, which is a major waste of panel space

Not to mention numerous duplicates of topics

I've been going to this con for years and while I know this type exists I very rarely run into them to the extent that they exist in this thread.

So when is this Colossalcon East thing going down? I can't go to normal Colossal because a friend is getting married (also because i couldn't get one even if I wanted to because i was not going to stand in line for hours last year)

It's about time they came up with a solution. Kalahari is at capacity and they didn't want to cap it. Though if the new venue for the East con doesn't have a waterpark then fuck it
>>
>>9454321
Sep8-10

The waterpark for the East location is actually even bigger and better, and beat their Sandusky location for "largest indoor waterpark in America". There's also 2 swim-up bars.

Colossal's own date and location isn't the best because it's out in bumblefuck and happens right at the end of the school year, yet it did amazingly well. East's location is also technically better because it's closer to a lot more major cities and densely populated areas.

It obviously won't be huge in its first year because no con is, but I'm sure it'll hit somewhere around 1k at least. If anything Colossal Ohio will stop growing by the thousands per year while East expands.

>Not a lot of panel info available

It's like they think I'm lying on an anonymous image board lols
>>

I don't doubt you, anon. It's just the fact you're bragging about it on an anonymous image board is try hard.

We know con girls are easy. Especially at party cons such as these
>>
Does anyone have room for 1 in their room? I can pay obviously, and most of the time I'll be out with my friends in the con or partying at their rooms. You'd likely never hear from me (unless you wanted hang, i can get along with anyone!) and the odds of me even crashing in your room would be low. I just don't want to go up there without having a concrete room.

If anyone is interested let me know! Heading into work now so replies will be slow but reply with your info and I'll hit you up when I get back :)

A little about me, I'm pretty quiet, LGBT and friendly. I used to cosplay a lot and really seriously but I'm just looking to come party with my friends and let loose for the weekend, so at most it'd be me, my bag, and a sleeping bag if you wanna put me on the floor. I might throw together a maid cosplay but it's unlikely.

Cheers <3

Because you're bragging about fucking women who lie to you about how in they are, in a thread full of people who are probably underage.

I lift too and I look pretty damn good by normie standards. I don't go bragging about it anonymously.

This is an important part. Bragging about seducing drunk, drugged up on xanax girls to suck your dick is not an impressive feat.

Get your dick wet, no one cares.

fucking auto correct.

Because you're bragging about fucking women who lie to you about how OLD they are
>>
>Every year wear fun swimsuit cosplays to colossalcon
>Every year get tryhard douchebros like these to buy round after round of drinks, food, whatever, sometimes for friends too
>Leave them high and dry, have a great time hanging out with confriends instead
>>
>>9460254

Then you meet the guys who aren't stupid enough to think buying drinks will get you laid, and you wake up hungover in their hotel room

I'm not even the other fucker in this thread; I seriously get a thrill out of banging pretentious chicks like you

Girls can't resist real confidence in the same way dudes can't resist nice tits. Even if they're metacognizant of it, there's nothing they can do.

Kek. Exactly!

So many pretentious and self righteous bitches lol. And fuck I won't be buying drinks for ANY of them.

Sure I might let them come smoke with me... But realistically, I don't take em back to smoke unless I know in getting something...

Again, abs and muscles make MOST good looking girls blush and open Dem legs.
