Aside from being super excited about this release, I wanted to know of any other lit recommendations you gulls might have? If not, have you guys ever read essays or seen a documentary that you approved of/loved? Please discuss!

I'd really like to see a sample page before I buy it though

There was that one where Lor explained the fashion to the guy, and had him dress in ouji after.

He was really genuine, and while it was obvious he probably didn't like the fashion itself, he wanted to learn about it and was concerned about his coord being well received.

I especially liked how he focused on the fashion and immediately got the 'Lolita' question out of the way v right off the bat, and didn't address that or that kind of narrative afterwards.

He came off as truly interested rather than judgemental.
Most other similar things usually spin a certain narrative, or the host talks about how weird and uncomfortable they are.

That title is a perfect representation of the lolita fashion community.

I really liked that video:

He has some other interesting videos as well.

Thanks for drawing my attention to this, OP. I'm curious what the "Very Rotten" part is about? "Rotten" originally makes me think of fujoshi but I doubt they're making a connection to that. Is it about comm drama or something?
>>
>>9235390
I think it's a reference to Momoko seeing herself as a rotten person due to her selfishness and lolita itself as a selfish, indulgent hobby.

I should watch that movie, I'm the worst lolita.

>>9235401
I'm underweight and adorable, thanks anon!

Does anyone have any recs for books on j-fash in general? Possibly history books or maybe just general lookbooks? I remember being at a con panel and the host listing off some books but I forgot to write them down.
>>
>>9235006
How can we preorder it?
>>
>>9235440
It's already up for preorder on Amazon! I'm putting my order in next paycheck, I'm extremely excited for it!

>>9235390
It's a reference to Kamikaze Girls, one of the contributors wrote the book so it's a good nod to him. Thank you for the link!
>>
>>9235452
Wait, Novala actually contributed to this? Did he write essays for it? I might actually be tempted to get it myself.
>>
>>9235467
He's a guest contributor, and there's also an interview with him somewhere in the book. Hopefully more info/sample pages get shown before the release date!

This kind of reminds me of pic related

It's an homage to KG/Shimotsuma Monogatari. I like it because it reminds me of 90s Riot Grrl zines. I hope So Pretty + Very Rotten comes off with the same vibe.
>>
>>9235433
Style Deficit Disorder is an old book, and even though information on J-street fashion may be outdated, I think it's a decent informational book.
>>
>>9235484
Just to add on, Jane Mai contributed to this zine as well! So if you liked her portion of the zine perhaps you'll like So Pretty/Very Rotten?

A quick discussion point, what do you all wish to see when our community is represented in media works? What does everyone wish could be highlighted or avoided?
>>
>>9235498
"Media works" is a rather broad term. When it comes to videos and 'documentaries' I like it when they focus on the fashion for what it is, and what it means for the people wearing it. Stories about individuals' personal struggles are okay as long as they directly relate to the fashion and aren't a focal point of the video; i.e. anecdotes about disapproving family members or street harassment are okay; over-sharing details about illnesses or religion (or other things that are meant to be personal), is not. And, again, as long as it's a minor part of the video. Creating drama or suspense in a video about a silly frilly niche fashion takes the whole fun out of it.
When it comes to written material, I do enjoy a more in-depth read into the subject. An anon once shared this essay: https://web.stanford.edu/group/sjeaa/journal111/Japan5.pdf Which discussed Japanese girls' personal experiences and thoughts (as well as a whole lot of other things) and I've found it absolutely fascinating.
>>
>>9235521
Keeping it broad was my intention! Thank you for the essay, I'll be sure to read it soon.
>>
>>9235521
This is amazing, thanks for sharing it anon
>>
>>9235521
This is really fascinating. It's interesting to read about the perception of lolita in a Japanese cultural context since the whole environment and attitude of the girls is so different to the West.

It's also interesting to see that lolita topped a poll of most hated youth fashion styles in 1994, even though we now perceive lolita back them as very tame. I wonder why specifically? Is Spa! a men's magazine? Maybe it's the lack of sex appeal, IDK.
>>
>>9235006
Hoe can I purchase this? This is the first time I have heard of this book.

Ignore this I am an idiot who got too excited by the thread and didn't read before I posted.
>>
>>9237030
It looks like just a trashy magazine you get at the supermarket with celebrity in a bikini on the cover, crazy news storys etc
>>
I really like the book Japanese Goth, does anyone know any other books like it, in English or Japanese?
>>
>>9237030
I really loved getting man inside look at Mary Magdalene's production process. Now I really want to throw money at them more than usual, that level of dedication is so impressive.
>>
Does anyone have Misako's lolita fashion book? I'm thinking of translating the soft lolita and the history of lolita parts but I can't find any scans
>>
>>9241313
Ask in the general, I'd love to see translations
>>
>>9235409
>>9235390
The title is in reference to the old school Japanese "rotten girl" version of lifestyling. In Japan, lifestylers often tend to embrace "rotten girl" over the "innocent maiden" version that's more prominent in the Western communities. Basically, the idea of being a rotten girl is that you don't care about what anyone else thinks and don't live by anyone else's idea of what you should be like, and if it makes you "rotten" then so be it. Momoko was specifically written to embody that idea.

Her stuff is awesome! You can even use these technically as little coloring books.

What a cute idea! Going to do that now.
