Idk, my character has no personality and the anime is centered around the guys so theres no way she'd be a favorite character. Also, the guy who asked for my picture had really big normie vibes. I'm starting to think I hold record for most people to assume I'm cosplaying a character or person I know nothing about.

Some really good advice I've seen here for this (for couples/two people at least) is to ask them for a group shot, then a picture each separately, then just delete the pictures of the cosplayer you don't want photos of later.

facebook and other sites used to be easy to poke around on to look for photos, but with the increased privacy settings or need to be friends or "friends of friends" to look at or tag photos it's much harder

also with the number of cosplays galleries of pics are larger than ever and sometimes take awhile to all get edited and then posted

When I go to conventions and take pictures, I generally take pictures of people who are very obviously cosplaying (so as to not look like an idiot).

Some cosplays are people cosplaying characters who dress normally, and it's hard to tell. That's the other thing. Phoenix Wright is a very recognizable character, but Maya (from that picture I saw earlier) is dressed pretty casually, so people might not even know the person is cosplaying at all.

In fact, I think that's probably a good reason a lot of the anons in this thread get looked over. And why lolitas are mistaken for cosplayers by people that don't know that lolita is a thing.

The people at the con probably recognized Phoenix in the same way, and didn't recognize Maya for the same reason I don't. Never even seen her. A lot of entertainment nowadays is enjoyed through a third party (twitch, edited videos of games, etc) and it leaves people with visual knowledge of main characters and nothing else.

I honestly don't get mad if people don't know every little arbitrary detail. Not everyone is going to be as big of a fan as you are. Just have to kind of accept that, especially if you're cosplaying a character that a lot of casual fans wouldn't recognize.

On the flip side, I don't get cosplaying characters from things that you've never watched/read/played. I get liking a character design but at least read up on the character first if you're not going to get into the source material. Most of the time it's people trying to jump on the hype train for something because it's popular.

For me, it's just not being more familiar with the source material as a whole. I made the same mistake once and still feel bad for it. If you cosplay a main character, I don't think you should be surprised or confused when someone expects you to follow through or get something that was a big moment. Small internet memes and 1 panel jokes, alright. But not something that counted as memorable to the main story.

Most people who get asked for photos get asked by many people so they won't think anything of it. Most people who take the time and effort to dress up are glad to be asked for photos as long as you are nice about it. This was many years ago, but somehow I still feel the salt

I shouldn't be upset by it, and I'm not really anymore, but I mean she could have at least taken a pity shot to spare my ego a tad. Especially since we explained the costume to her (she asked) and my friend wasn't cosplaying a normal shellder but the slowbro shellder tail, which looks nothing like a normal shellder...
