Are cryptocurrencies still a thing?
Some guy was saying a little while ago that there are new coins breaking the dollar threshold all the time and you can get in early if you monitor them.
>>
>>993534

They're a scam in the same way conventional currency is, i.e, the majority of it is held by a few people, the only difference is there's no realistic way of knowing who the owners of the majority are and what they plan to do.

Investing in or trading crypto now is just stock market tier gambling.
>>
>>993538
your entire post is oblivious to the entire nature of some cryptocurrencies.

Yeah, some shitcoins are premined and are held by a few people.

Look around and you'll find some that are easy to mine, distibuted, decentalised, have a good dev community and bright prospects.

Those are what you're looking for OP.

There were dozens back in 2013, but they're getting few and far between now, but things are starting to look up again

The problem with all of the altcoins is that they've been premined, which means they are pump n dumps by default.

Ripple was the shilled savior that would become the universal standard, but it turned out it was just another pump dump

Ethereum and Monero are two more obvious pump n dumps

The only one that has endured the test of time so far is Bitcoin. It too has problems with hoarding, but not to the extent of all of the others.

The biggest problem facing Bitcoin right now is its volatility. There are plenty of Bitcoin vendors, but you'd be stupid to actually spend Bitcoin on anything. This will either stabilize at some point, or completely crash it.

Both the Chinese and US federal government really hate cryptos. The law that was recently passed that required you to pay capital gains on them, really put a hurting of the future of cryptos ever being used as a real currency.

So, yeah....
Any of these even worth mining or what?
Or are they super hard to mine like bitcoin is?
>>
>>993689
Depends on the coin, but most likely no they're not worth mining.

Mining can be hugely profitable but you need to know what you're doing, difficulty could leave you with paperweights and the returns are never quick. If you do it right though it's crazy.

I'd say altcoins other than bitcoin are a bit of a waste right now, the best time to get into altcoins was the hight of the 2013 bubble when bitcoin peaked. Then you could easily turn 200%+ profits a day by getting in before fontas's shenanigans on btce.

Those were the glory days, but it was just pure p&d bullshit.

Some good coins to look into right now I'd say are DASH, PPC, maidsafe and namecoin

Ethereum could be pretty good in the future, but I'm really worried right now about the scarcity
>>
>>993696
if you've got a decent gpu though there's pools that you can join and they mine the most profitable coin for you, so you don't need to do anything at all really.

Here's a good list, but you will need a good GPU

>>
>>993720
Seems kinda too good to be true.
Well, I don't have a GPU anyway.
>>
>>993732
well you do usually have to pay a fee to the pool, but it does mean they usually auto sell whatever shitcoin you're mining and give you profits in whatever you want, like btc
>>
>>993734
Hmm, I do happen to be at a dorm, so free electricity.
It might be worth it to buy a miner, you think?
>>
>>993738
most proof of stake altcoins can't be mined with a bitcoin miner, most have their own dedicated script and so bitcoin ASIC's aren't compatible, each coin is different though.

GPU's will generally universally work though, I remember some being CPU only
>>
>>993752
Do you need a computer to use a GPU or is there a way to run it standalone? I'm looking and either it doesn't seem possible, or people don't do it.
All I have is a laptop in integrated graphics...
>>
>>993765
youll need a pc
>>
>>993776
Yep, seems so.
Any clue what the ROI could be with a ~$650 graphics card?
Any chance of breaking $1000 a month that's just about the only way this will be worth it.

I have an old PC I guess, but I'm sure I'd have to get a power supply and whatnot. And then there'd be the very very annoying hassle of getting it here to my dorm. Just trying to find out if it'd be worth it.

You obviously dont know what proof of stake even means.

Proof of stake does away with the need for any kind of mining hardware.

Staking is done from the wallet file in software.

This is a kike on a whole other level.

Defending this so hard, because you already hold lots of bitcoins and waiting for people buy into it so you can sell yours to them for REAL LIFE MONEY.

>Kike lvl over 9000
>>

>most proof of stake altcoins can't be mined with a bitcoin miner

Not only did you completely misread my point, but some PoS still require mining. like PPC

https://www.peercoin.net/mining

PoS attempts to discourage monopolization, by distributing based on ownership, and while it can and is used in some as the full form of distribution, it is in no way true for all Proof of Stake coins.

My point was merely PoS is an example of how bitcoin mining is not compatible
>>
I used to mine altcoins and memecoins that /g/ shilled until this board was created. Since this it's been nothing but Bitcoin shills. I mined Dogecoin on my old 7870XT for 2 weeks when it first came out and sold it for $500 around that Christmas. Everything else has pretty much been shit to me.
>>
>>993785
I haven't mined anything in over 1,5 years

I'd say for a top end card like that you're looking at a breakeven of 2-3 months (im really guessing here, things could have changed hugely) depending on what coins and how well they do

That's with no electricity costs

Your best bet is looking for profitability calculator with the H/s of the card.

You'll probably be more profitable just buying whatever shitcoin you think is going to the moon with your $650 though
>>
>>993943
Are you having problem?
>>
Gulden is taking over everything
>>
>>993534
In my personal opinion, crypto-currencies still have a long way to go. Bitcoins were a great attempt but it's just.. I don't really know how to explain it, but there's something bigger that'll either pop up soon or is already metastasizing somewhere.
>>
>>995719
It already popped up and is called Gulden
>>
>>995719
Its called ethereum.

Heres a video explaining it.

Yes unbelieveable! Not even 2 years old but already defeated Litecoin.
More places you can use Gulden compared to Litecoin!
Amazing now Bitcoin better watch out!
