Well most of these coins seem to be very old. Most of them have 'coin' in their name and seem to be direct BTC competitors, so that was the first wave of coins after Bitcoin's success. Projects like ETH are a whole different story.

I had made a script looking at the names of the top 1000 market cap coins and half of it still has "coin" in it's name. 18 have "token".
