I think you and the host are thinking of it in two different ways, yours is completely valid though. The host might think that the coffee either costs 10 monopoly money or 1 USD so when you buy the coffee the second time with 1 USD, you're essentially getting a 20% discount. If you switched your USD to monopoly money the second time and tried to buy a coffee you would be 2 monomoneys short.
