Can somebody explain me what 'investing' actually means?

Investing mean puting your money into something that you think will grow and give you an ROI- Return On Investment- profit. Different investments operate in different ways. Stocks can pay dividends in accordance with company profits. Many of them there is supply and demand in trading and the traffic influences price. Sell higher than you bought in for and you profit.

you can also invest in a trailor or tractor and rent it out to an industry (I make 100 a week renting out machinery to film industry) my inital investment was 36k and broke even years ago

Its basically betting on a horse for a long run.
There are a lot of things you can factor in though, its less of a bet in that way.
But its still gambling.

Not that there is anything wrong with gambling, unless you are a degen.
