Mist for me never finished updating so I was never able to view my own wallet.

Thats cause you shut down your mist wallet/pc before it fully synched. When you first open it it uses fast sync (headers only), but subsequently it does full syncs (header + block). You gotta go to your geth and run "geth fast sync" (just google that command)
