How often is it really necessary to partake in a ICO?
I am new to this, but usually what happens is:
1. Project gets announced and developers/marketers try to generate a shitload of hype.
2. People buy ICO
3. Then after launch the price either rises a bit, or dips down
4. The price slowly drops to almost 0, because the hype starts to fade, and people realize there is no product.
5. Several months of developing time
6. Product eventually starts to come together, and price skyrockets again
Why not buy at step 5? It's easier to find out if the developers aren't just hyped up idiots at this point, and you still go from an all time low to a much higher high, if your assessment is correct.

To clarify; when buying at step 2, aren't you just gambling on whether the hype will be even bigger shortly after the launch (opposed to during the ICO announcement)?

Look at 3 icos, analyse and decide for yourself.
I invested in about 15 icos (almost all solid projects).
5 went very well, at least 3x ico price
5 went mediocre, something like 1,5x
5 went awful, something like 0,5x
Test it and decide yourself of it's worthwhile.
there are some icos reviewed in some new report
they look fine to me
