Newfag here. As far as I understand, it's not enough to buy cryptos through a website like coinbase or kraken. You also need to store that crypto in some wallet, right? What wallet would you suggest using?

If you plan on trading bitcoin for other coins to make gains, you can keep it all on your exchage.
But it's still a risk, wallets are for longer term stroage of a coin that's not actively traded. I have no wallet and have two bitcoins with alts all keep on the bittrex exchange currently.
