How do I become a freelancer? I'm tired of being a wageslave and spending 8h in an office with my boss looking at my screen all the time. Would like to be my own boss at my pace. I know however, that being a freelancer can be tough too.

Are there any sources, books, etc. that you can recommend? My field is UI/UX design and I have a strong portfolio. But I don't know how I can get my first clients. Should I just mail thousand companies and introducing myself? I would rather stay away from those many freelance platforms as the competition is high and there are tons of people who do the job for 10% of the fair payment.

My idea is also to make an PDF file with an introduction, my skills, my recent work and then some pricing options. Like 3 days of work as a cheapest package and 7 days of work for a high price to get a fully working prototype of their app/software. Of course flexible, so that it depends on what the client could need and pay.

I just can't really figure out where to start and get my first jobs. Do you also have some general advices about this?

I'm actually doing freelance work right now, and here's how I got my first set of clients:

1. Advertise in as many places as you can, for as low a cost as you can. My first real client was a local who saw a PAPER ad I put up on a community bulletin board. I shit you not. We met at starbucks, I laid out the service I could provide, the cost, listened to what his business needed, and we agreed that I'd work on a month-to-month basis.

2. Apply for various temp jobs, or jobs that are looking for someone on a contract basis. In USA there is craigslist and other job-search sites that list these types of jobs. Many companies prefer to hire someone on a "1099 basis" because they don't have to deal with extra costs like healthcare, HR, etc. So this is ideal for freelancers who don't want to wagecuck at a fixed location.

Hope that helps. Freelancing is rough and lots of uncertainty involved but gives you the freedom that is obviously different to wageslavery.

I'm trying to provide only GOOD info on /biz/ and less trashy shitposts.

What is your daily date? (Or a rough est if you don't have a set one). It sounds like you work for a pretty low rate from the way you advertise your services.

What ever you do, get on Dribbble (yes that's meant to have three b's). I also recommend checking out a YouTube channel called "The Futur" - it's a great resource and has a lot of content about the business side of design.

If you're into UI/UX and you're any good then you should be getting day rates of around £150 at least

That's actually what I meant with "strong" portfolio. I also have lots of followers there.
I'm gonna check that youtube channel, thank you!

Isn't that a bit low for freelancing? From what I know is that the average in Germany is around 400 - 600 euro per day as you have to pay insurance, taxes and all the other costs by yourself.
