I just opened a Questrade account (RRSP) and had a few questions. Is investing a couple hundred bucks at a time a bad strategy?
I was told trading fees amounted to $5-10 per trade, so if I invest $200 with a $10 fee, it will take 6 months just to break the commission charge if the ETF goes up 10% that year. Should I save the money and only be investing $1000+ at any given point? I will only be investing in Canadian bonds and Vanguard stock indexes.
Second question, if I invest in the Vanguard U.S. Total Market Index ETF (VUN.TO), will I be charged interest since this is a representation of the US stock market, and thus US dollars? I saw a post where something like this happened but did not fully understand.
Thanks in advance

You can buy ets for free.
Yes buying anything else 200bucks at a time is a bad idea since commieions will be greater than your gains.
Dont trade in us dollars. There are huge fees for swapping currencies.
If you wany us stocks, which nshould, buy the sp500 listed ones on the tsx (vfv.to).

isn't VUN.TO listed on the tsx? why would that make it okay though? isnt it still a US based stock

oh, ya sorry vun is listed on the tsx. thats a good one.
The underlying asset is the same. The currency exposure is the same. BUT you can buy it in canadian dollars. so you dont need to pay the 2% fee to go into us dollars then to 2% fee to go back into cad one day.

Is it better to invest in vanguard indexes or the xic.to, xsp.to, etc
does it matter?

I like vanguard because the have the lowest fees.
the underlying assets will be pretty much identical tho so we are talking like .01% difference.
if you are rich maybe the blackrock ones are nice because they offer more products, like an emerging markets etf and such

Why invest in a total market fund? It's a stock pickers market. Just dump it all into shopify

tfw my portfolio is 20% shopify
dont be like us OP
is it a bad time to invest in indexes though? since the market is breaking records and doing so well
