Around 2010 when bitcoin was still in it's early days, there was a faucet that gave 1 free coin and eventually others that gave half a coin or so. The PC i was using got fucked and I never really thought about it until BTC spiked. Now, I've recovered the .dat file but it won't open in any of the modern wallet clients. Since they were acquired at such an early stage do I need to use a legacy client and run through the entire blockchain? Any suggestions?

All you need to do is extract the private key from the .dat file and import it into a newer wallet.Use a legacy wallet for that
Had this issue before, it's corrupted. Send me the file ill sort it for 10%

Thanks this seems to be the most likely fix. Hopefully it works because I'm broke.

Younger oldfag here.
Faucets gave me 0.05 BTC each time.
Funny to hear that now every single one of those faucet drops is worth ~$140.
Try opening it in Notepad should work unless it is encrypted I would assume.
