The value is in the trust. Just like any other currency. Fiat promissory notes especially. It is indeed created out of thin air, out of beliefs.
Just because it isn't backed by practically anything does NOT by any means lead to a lack of value.
You can always get whatever you can trade for it. And people certainly are willing to trade.

A good analogy would be digital games. The game itself is just data, you're already paying for data transmission.
But the idea that it is a game, and that it CAN be used/played (Even if with currencies, the only use being trading for others), makes people pay for it.
Even though it's just a copy of data. Probably made for pennies of electricity, out of thin air so to speak.

Introducing a fork and people investing fiat/alt coin in purchasing it does.
