Is accounting knowledge useful for anything at all beyond writing debits and credits in a finance department?

Yes. Understanding the three financial statements is crucial in Finance.

for a retard like you? probably not

I feel its similar to understanding how a car works - if you have any interest in getting involved with starting your own business, investing in smaller ventures, etc etc you should really have an understanding of how everything works.
Knowledge is leverage

Yeah, on a basic level, like knowing the difference between having profits and having positive cash flows, or like understanding the difference between buying assets and having costs. But I mean on an advanced level. Is anything beyond an intro accounting course useful?

It depends.
If you are interested to get into somewhat "exotic" niches like balance sheet controlling, an overall advanced knowledge of accounting is crucial.
Other examples would be accounting in several industry sectors, as a non-profit company has to follow other regulations than a hospital or a pharma company. A big multicorporate enterprise might have the desire to have a more capital market orientated accounting.
"Basic accounting skills" alone will get you in a nice small office with an ok wage and stable working hours. Advanced knowledge in accounting can basically get you anywhere in between this and a chief executive officer position.
I however would advise to mix skills with accounting. As nobody likes accounting (aside from the people understanding it), it is realy valueable for a company when the accountant understands the tech-speak from the IT-department or the engineers at least at a basic level.

Forgot: also treasury is geting more important day by day. Most people in this sector I know either have a finance or a accounting background.
