Are .wallet files specific to the software or can I use it on any software?

For example, if I am using Multibit and use Multibit to create a .wallet and put BTC in that wallet, can I then run Electrum and open that .wallet file in Electrum and still have my BTC with the same address, same file, everything?

Also, what is the best wallet to be using? I had Multibit but they are ending support. Does it matter what wallet I have my BTC in on August 1st to ensure that I have BTC from both/all forks (assuming it forks)? Obviously an offline wallet, but does it matter if it's Multibit/Electrum/etc wallet?

Also, supposedly the private keys are kept in wallet.dat but I have wallet.wallet not wallet.dat. What is the difference between wallet.wallet and wallet.dat?

Good one OP :)

Send me your wallet.wallet file and I'll convert it to the proper format for free.

I got one that needs to be converted I need an address to send it to you. Post your wallet so I can send you my Bitcoins to be converted.

No, each software uses a different wallet format.
If you want to switch, you need to export private keys from one software and import them into another.
Or, you know, just send the coins into the new wallet if you don't care about the transaction fee.
>Also, what is the best wallet to be using?
I like Electrum.
>I had Multibit but they are ending support.
Multibit went to shit a long time ago back when it split into Multibit and Multibit Classic.
Probably a good thing they're putting it out of its misery.

Doesn't matter as long as it lets you export private keys to all addresses.
Again, you'll need to export the BTC private keys and import them into a BCC wallet.

Different software uses different extensions. Bitcoin Core uses .dat, Multibit uses .wallet etc.
