What are some freelance work sites where freelancers aren't treated like trash?
On all the sites I've seen, freelancers have their completed job count shown, so that Indian companies running job application spambots absolutely dominate, and no one will ever give a freelancer their first job since every employer insists on experience.
Can't you fake it? Like, make a different account, give yourself a job, and say you finished it?

Well, I'm using Freelancer.com currently, and I have one job completed there (only because it was a job where I only got paid if the work I did was better than anyone else's); but my competition have hundreds of completed jobs, which have given them plenty of stuff to put in their portfolio.

Well then, you're competing with portfolio. You should remember people don't tend to look at the number of works you've done (if you're an artist). They'll ten to look more on the QUALITY of your work.
If you want more "recognition" I'd recommend you to join some contest. You could easily look around the web for them.
Why not look for a more stable line of work though?
