Alt coins have value because people start buying them "Just in case" and because people market them. You can buy thousands of Alt coins while they are worth practically nothing and just hold them for a few years.

Then they get it on an exchange, market it, throw premined coins out to generate interest. Once the ball gets rolling it typically snow balls. Then if the coin gets on more reputable exchanges with 'higher' requirements like Bittrex, demand for the coin will increase resulting in the price going up.
