hey guys, new to the whole bitcoin scheme, which wallet and which platform would you recommend? what are the pros and cons? any helpful tips?

desktop - electrum
eth - myetherwallet

Hardware if you fear the keylogger. Coinbase for the broker and a temp wallet, electrum for the wallet if you think to hold and you don't have to do any trade. Bittrex as exchange and wallet togheter if you always trade.

Use the cheapest and most reputable that you can. Search for reviews to see if they are legit. Just accept that you will be uploading your ID or use something like bittylicious that lets you buy without ID but only up to a limit.
