Literally speculation.
Since it's not actually backed by a physical object, people speculate it's worth MOSTLY on popular opinion, and occasionally on the hash rates. People who mine this stuff care more about hash rates than the actual traders do.
Everyone involved with crypto currencies knows that the majority of currency in the world is no longer backed by gold or any other precious medals. Therefore they correctly deduced that the businessmen and bankers would strive to create a global currency for the future that wasnt dependent on physical items such as gold or silver or gems, but rather in public value/specualtion/validation and on a series of math equations.
