I work in renewable energy finance (which is really only a thing because of the government subsidies). The only real players in this space are your mega-cap banks who have sufficient pools of capital and pay a high enough income tax rates (enough to account for the huge losses the alt energy producers incur).

These large scale projects are financed through a tax equity partnership with the bank through either a sale/leaseback of the equipment or a joint venture where the bank absorbs all the tax benefits through tax credits on initial investment, super accelerated depreciation schedules etc. The bank sucks all the tax benefits out of the power system demanding around ~10% ROEC and then exits the partnership, leaving the producer to operate independently.

This setup is VERY profitable for banks and great for bonuses in REF. Thanks green energy!!
