I bought 2 bitcoin about a year ago at $600. From what I understand the only way to buy altcoins on bittrex is with other coins/bitcoins, is that correct?

Is there any way to put fiat money into bittrex using paypal? Or do I just have to transfer some btc from coinbase?

Basically coinbase is the way to do it. None of these exchanges will accept fiat without getting a blood sample or making you go through some Russian mystery-merchant processor.
