How do I negotiate a price for a work of art?
I posted pic related on /b/, and this one guy said he'd hang it in his room in a second and that he'd be very interested in buying it. He then gave me a throwaway email account.
It is a charcoal drawing on 18in X 24 in paper.
Most nice prints this size can go for around $30 but since this is an original, one of a kind drawing, I think it should be more.
I want to highball it and then work down, but I'm not sure what amount is too much.
Art is not really priced objectively, especially when it's from lesser-known artists.
What do you personally value it at? How long did it take you to draw?
I'm guessing that $30 is low for the amount of effort and time it took, but anything over $100 may be pushing it if there's no name recognition.

I think I spend about 3 or 4 sessions of 1-2 hours each working on it.
Shouldn't you price it higher if you put that much work into it?
Although it is original one of a kind objectively I wouldn't rate this more than $5.

Price it higher than you think it is worth.
Have you never read studies about how liquor is artificially priced higher to convey value? It's an invidious distinction of course. Same with wine. Even professional judges cannot tell the difference between bottom shelf wine and hundred dollar bottles.
But the higher price conveys value. Works for art too. If you think it's worth $30, just charge $100.
There are geometry paintings at this local café I go to as well. Seriously, simple 4x4 blocks of different colors or a foreground triangle painted on a different color background. That café moves the product, no doubt.
In short, research some economic journals about value conveyed through price for conspicuous items. I say charge $100. Some dumb nigger will buy it. Also, look the part. Like, wear ripped flannels or whatever "artists" wear today.
Ive sold way shittier art for a lot higher than $100
This would be $110 easy

probably between $40-80 depending on how much you value your hour is worth
