Thats not how shorting works.
Shorting means selling someone elses coin with the promise that you will buy their coin back for them no matter what it turns into later.
Meaning if you short btc right now and it crashes then you will make bank.
Also Americas military doesnt protect the value of the dollar. It protects our business contracts with the rest of the world.
If the government printed out a quadrillion dollars today then the value would drop dramatically but people would still be forced to do business with us in American dollars.
So YOUR dollar isnt being protected but the governments dollar is.
