Is the only value to most at coins just speculative? It doesn't seem you can really use them for anything other than pump and dump them. Sure some places take bitcoins instead of USD, but the only place I ever saw doing that was a computer repair shop.

What are the useful for?

Crypto coins are perfect for online tipping. Imagine how you can just in one click tip any poster you like. Just as a way to say "thanks". Unfortunately, this is not implemented yet, but the potential is huge.

What makes them better for tipping over USDs?

Because using real money online is a pain in the ass. People are always cautious when it come to using things like banking cards.

Crypto coins, on the other hand, are easy and careless

I guess just copy and pasting a coin wallet address is easier than the card number/billing info, but it's not like it's that much harder. Also bank cards/credit cards come with fraud protection. Do coin wallets?

I've bought gold and silver bullion with my bitcoin gains before.

There exist hardware wallets, they're pretty safe, but the point is, crypto coins are much more fun to use than real money, and they're much easier to integrate into any website or software

You gotta think about third world currencies too. It's a global currency, the U.N recently used it to distribute human aid in jordan. With the projected development of the third world and the lack of the financial expertise to overcome the strength of the 1st world economies, cryptos are an easy answer to everything.
The difficulty only comes in converting to fiat for tax purposes and businesses, but right now the foundation for that is growing.

That's a good aurgument for bitcoins, but what about all of the other coins?

I've bought video games and amazon gift cards at a significant discount with bitcoin before.

Also, the banking card is probably the most insecure thing EVER. It's barely enough to know what digits are printed on it to make purchases without your permission. Absolutely retarded payment tool. That is precisely the reason why normies are VERY reluctant to pay for anything online unless it's a well-known place like Amazon

Try giving a 20 cents tip without paying another 60 cents in bank fees and a 10% comission to the site, etc.

A big part of the appeal of crypto is removing the middle man.

But why cryptos and not just one crypto? Everyone's using bitcoin as an example which is well and good, but all these emerging cryptos seem redundant. Is there a use for them aside from pumping them short term?

Bitcoin is really slow, Litecoin and many other altcoins are so much faster. Ripple is almost instant, just transferred it myself - plain rocket-speed. So there's at least one reason why we need altcoins.
