Find something legitimately difficult that nobody can give you any help with and hold yourself to a higher standard than anybody else.

Go into software development and specialize in something. Get a job in that something and then work your way up. It's more difficult to replace people with specialized skills so you'll be more likely to get raises and not get fired.
