Question:
Sorry, I've never been to this board, but you all seem professional or at least knowledgeable
Is it typical for an employer to pay for your conferences?
I work in the financial aid office of a university and my boss emailed me about a professional development conference asking if I wanted to go...but it's like $800. Are they seriously asking me to pay to miss (hourly) work for 3 days just networking? That sounds insane. I'd ask my boss but I don't want to look like an idiot
just say no

Yes, they should pay. I also don't join ANY organizations unless employer pays my membership fees or journal fees.

But professional development and networking is good, I just can't fucking shit out hundreds of dollary-doos to do it while also not getting paid for my regular work.

Thanks anon. That makes a lot of sense. I want to be good at my job, but something about having to pay for it while not getting paid rubs me the wrong way

>But professional development and networking is good
especially if you're looking for a new job. Go and pay yourself if you don't want to work here anymore.

Just ask your boss if he/she/it is offering to send you. Adults have adult conversations.
