When you short, you borrow the coins at the initial price from a lender at an interest. When you close your position, you give those coins back at the new price. The difference between the initial price and this new price is your profit.

I wait till there is a lot of hype on something, like for example, LTC. Made no sense that one of the oldest coins raised about 300% based on the potential of Segwit.
