/biz/ help me : I love the Mercedes GLC (pic related) and I'm currently doing and engineering degree. I was wondering if I could eventually afford one once I have my degree and get employed, so I could use that in the meantime as motivation when feeling down/not feeling like studying.

Basically the MSRP for a brand new 2017 GLC is around $45,000/50,000 CAD and the average wagecuck salary in my field after 3 years of experience is around $60,000 a year. So the car price is about 75% of the yearly salary

So without beating around the bush, is it unreasonable for me to think that after getting out of uni and working for some time I'll be able to afford one ?
What's /biz/'s rule of thumb when it comes to buying a car ?

thanks
>>
The GLC sucks. No joke. Get an E class or even CLS for close to same price - you'll be much happier

If you're gonna wagecuck like that you gotta be realistic and realize that you wont be able to afford a new one for a long time.

Depending on your priorities in life you could get a second hand one after a couple of years of working, but do you really want to be spending that amount of money on a car when you could be saving up for a down payment on a house, or a nice stock portfolio?

But I'd like at least some offroad capability with an SUV as I want to leave the beaten path + /o/ told me the E class is pleb-tier

$600/mo lease is your only option

NICE APRIL FOOLS

very very unreasonable, not to mention stupid as hell.

rule of thumb: dont waste money on luxury vehicles. asset depreciates like crazy, insurance rates increase, u become a target for illegal immigrant scams, and u will look like a huge doofus for driving a nice car at ur salary level.

it really needs to mean a LOT to you for it to be worth it. almost everyone i know that has car payments regrets their purchase, even those that bought like 30k cars.

literally the car would have to be meaningful enough to be the sole focus of ur life.
>>
Get the degree and the job first, then think about buying something that isn't for putting around from point A to B.

Alright thanks, you brought me back to reality, I got too carried away in my car fantasies.
There are over cars that I should probably consider
>>
Something around $20,000 to $30,000 would be a lot more realistic for someone making 60K a year right?
>>
you need to also factor in costs like rent, healthcare, food, etc. i'm pretty sure you aren't gonna want to drive that Benz to a shitty house/appt.
>>
>>1921799
presumably nobody here has a new car.

your goal isn't unreasonable or even a bad idea. If you want it, get it. That's what good credit is for. Yes, you could probably buy 2 crappy cars for what that one costs, but you don't need 2 crappy cars.
>>
>>1921799
With financing - you can afford it easy once you get that first 60k/yr (or more) professional job.

The real redpill is making enough money by working for yourself and being able to afford it outright.

>i'm pretty sure you aren't gonna want to drive that Benz to a shitty house/appt.
Coming from Russia I can assure you young people here would rather drive expensive cars and live in shitty commieblocks than owning a decent house/appt
But yeah you're right, I'd rather not personally
>>
I'm kind of in a similar boat. I dream of being able to buy a second hand Mercedes GLA 45 AMG after I graduate from Uni but i'm gonna have to put that off for several years because I'd rather have 10+ acres of land to live on and build.
>>
Wasteful, gratuitous.
>>
>>1921799
fellow eng here.

forget it dude, once you graduated, you'll have bigger plans and eventually a wife comes around and before you know it, you'll be saving money for a house.
don't worry you might have a nice car 5 years after the kids finished uni.
the car you pictured is an old people car anyway. you should think about a porsche: the kind of people that drive around in one, are that kind of people for a reason.

business is a career to get rich or not make it at all. engineering is a career that enables a relativly secure, mediocre wealthy life style long term, for most graduates.
