Isn't it legal? I know there are a few Canadian saffron farms already.

But they're not profitable, they only barely stay alive through bureaucratic tax voodoo involving the hiring of communist black dwarfs with speech impediments

Ah yes, I saw that documentary. It's worth checking out if anyone is interested. It's called the Black Lispy Marx-midgets.
It's harder than you'd think.
Primary exporters are Morocco, Iran, "Turkey", and "Spain". Turkey and Spain primarily repackage Iranian saffron and claim it as their own, and if you are importing to the US you can get locked the fuck up if it shakes out that your ultimate source is Iran.
>starting up a small farm
It only grows in chaparral climate zones and comes in at approximately one pound per acre. Basically it takes a lot of otherwise useless land and cheap labor for it to be as lucrative as you would hope. If you aren't already in a position to grow it then you're best off a middleman, in which case it comes down to your contacts.

Most safrole used in MDMA production comes from sassafras, not saffron.
I'm sure it's technically possible to use saffron as a precursor, but it would take thousands upon thousands of flowers, no?
No one's getting tasered or arrested for this.
