How do I start a 5 year plan? I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I'm 28, have $0 debt, college educated & make $52k/yr & recently single. In April I'll be moving to a new city (renting) to start my new job & my living expenses will be under $700/month. What kind of goals should I be setting for myself? 401k max out? Down payment for a house? Invest in the stock market?

Become a hot dog chef and travel the world

That's defiantly an option

Before you can do anything else, you should buy a fucking house. Pissing money away on rent in possibly one of the most retarded things you can do.

Look into first time homebuyer credits and understand how much you can deduct on your taxes. Also is your 401k a hard percentage of your income match, or is it fractional dollar matching?

I've heard of these first time buyer programs. What would you suggest for a down ?

I would suggest you leave yourself with an emergency fund that is acceptable for your life. 20% is optimal since it avoids the need to pay property mortgage insurance. If you can't afford that, then do what you can while maintaining the aforementioned emergency fund. They start at as low as 3% down. Asking for the seller to pay part of closing cost is allowed for up to 3% of the purchase price too, if you're tight on liquidity.

Also make sure your prospective property meets the first time home buyer credit.
