Banks: ~8% for TDs > 1yr; 0.5% extra for senior citizens.
Others (companies, etc.): variable; I've heard of 11% from a finance company, and 1.5%-2% per month from a local lender (more akin to a loan shark; he charges 0.5-1% over what he pays out).

Can New Zealanders not invest in the S&P 500? Just open a foreign investment account and buy total US stock market. Or would it be taxed to shit?

The UK is complicated.

You have to open multiple accounts which give a high rate for a small amount ie 5% on £2500.

The hassle is having that many accounts and having to set up automated transfers to move money between them to qualify

7 day notice deposit currently on 6.25%, can go up to 6.9 the more money you deposit. If I switched it to 32 day notice period I'd get 6.5%.

2 year Government bond is 8%, while 5 year is 8.75%. I just don't like the idea of the Government using people's tax money to pay my bonds back, especially since the majority of our tax revenue comes from a tiny minority.

I'm torn between just leaving my money as is, Govt. bonds, or just put my balls on the line and go equity.

The Central banks literally lend retail banks billions at 0% on condition that those retail banks lower their savings and mortgage rates. This also drives up house prices by increasing the amount people are allowed to borrow.

NZ is shit for investing. Shares are something like minimum $30.00 per transaction.

I actually don't mind expensive broker rates, they encourage fewer trades which can often result in more thoughtful transactions.

I've always thought that retail investors need not buy and sell more than 10 times per year to run a decent portfolio.
