In USA you pay for training. They realized people were using trades instead of college, and that didn't make them money, so they set up certifications and made them expensive. Since they sound nice, the field eventually demanded them.

I'd rather take the second. Fuck working 12-16 hour shifts 7 days a week just to make 80-120K a year which is typical for those pipe fitter jobs.

I'd rather work a Mon-Fri job around the shore of Virginia. Lots of marine and shipbuilding jobs that pay $20-30/hour with normal 8-10 hour shifts 4-5 days a week. That would be more than enough for my needs. But when I apply to these and get interviews, they always say they'll call me back but never do. I'm assuming it's because of my lack of experience or because I don't know anybody in the unions to get my foot in the door. I always thought welding required no formal training or experience. They made you weld something and if you passed, you got hired. I never even witnessed that. It was just a bunch of HR bullshit.

I guess I can either

A) Get some $12-15/hour job through a temp agency just to get a year's experience at least then try again.

B) Suck somebody's dick in the Union to be my reference.

C) Go to a CDL school and become a truck driver at the shipping yard instead.
