In my country it's pretty common to rob atm's, I don't think this trend has spread to a lot of other countries yet.

They steal a car, ride to an atm, fill it with gas, use a remote detonator to ignite the gas, pick up the cash, and leave.

Most of the time they get 20 - 100 k €, the pros have like a 90% succes rate, the amatuers 50%.

Personally I also think bank robberies are stupid, if you want to rob something just rob jewelry store, or pharmacy. Also make sure ypu have the connections to sell and have patience.

As far as I can determine there are two successful strategies.

1. Get in, get the 10k or so in the registers, get out within two minutes before police response. Do this repeatedly every few months while working a normal job, volunteering in the community etc. Eventually launder your pile of cash years later, perhaps writing it off as gambling income after you have ceased all criminal activity.

2. Go big. Empty out the vaults. There is no way that the police won't respond in a timely fashion, so you're going to need hostages and a getaway plan.

Neither of those is up my alley.

A few years ago at Logan airport, a guy walked in wearing a uniform, said he worked for the contractor that ran the ATMs in the airport. Said that one of the ATMs in terminal B was acting up, not getting a signal, giving out the wrong amount of funds. State police walked him to the ATM, he disconnected it, put it on a dolley, and got escorted out to an "unmarked van". He was never seen again, and he obviously wasn't from the ATM contractors.
