I'm a finance noob with £5000 sitting in the bank doing nothing. What should I do?

Couldn't hurt buying £50 of BTC, ETH and learning how to store the things.

split it between high interest savings account. I think £5k is enough for an emergency fund.
Anything over your emergency fund, open a stocks and shares ISA and invest in index funds like Vanguard LS 100

Why Vanguard LS 100?
>>1811301
If that is your only savings I would just sit on it for a rainy day, it's nice to have an emergency fund if shit goes south.
If you can accumulate cash beyond that I'd look into some sort of low risk ETF or high yield savings account.
Once you feel comfortable with your reserves start looking to higher risk investments.

Why can't I stick it in a stocks and shares ISA and if a rainy day comes along, just withdraw it?
>>1811437
You absolutely can, but as you know stock prices can fluctuate. It would be unfortunate if you needed to liquidate when the price was down.
If you are comfortable with whatever fees/risk is associated then just go for it.
I'm a burger though so I'm not that familiar with what an ISA is or what the USA equivalent financial instrument would be
>>1811454
To keep it simple, an ISA is a type of savings account which is tax free, a bit like an American IRA but not limited to retirement purposes. The two main varieties of ISA are cash (which like most savings accounts have a pitiful yield) and investment (allowing you to receive dividends and capital gains free of tax).
OP should definitely consider an investment isa. I'm the fag who's always talking about p2p in britfag threads so I'm going to suggest that too. P2P money is often very liquid too if you ever have to cash your chips in.

It's an easy no-thought way of investing for beginners.
Pretty cheap to admin, and autobalances based on market conditions.
Historically it has returned about 10% annually since 2012 (30% in the last year), but it'll tank with everything else if there's a recession.
