I've had three moderately successful people (200k+ salaries from managerial positions) tell me that I can put my ranking in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on a resume. This is for entry level positions graduating from college.
It baffles me. Can somebody explain what they meant by this (or what they may have meant by this)? What am I meant to display when I try to start my career? What they would tell me was along the lines of displaying personality traits that make me look like a good person. It wasn't specifically about being a good worker, but as an all-around person. Why might putting martial arts experience be a benefit for a resume for an entry level position?
Pic related. How I would feel about putting a "hobbies" section on a resume.
How would you feel about someone putting their volunteer activities on a resume? One thing to consider is that as a black belt you have responsibilities to your juniors as well, and should reflect on both your leadership and your willingness to invest in yourself/others. Food for thought.
There is a difference between
>"participates in sports"
and
>"trough staying in the Martial Arts system, I have as a Senior gotten X/Y cermonial markings, showing maturity/moderation/learning/patience"
But the downside is that unless the ranking system is well known, it means fuck all.
It also means you are showing that you have a life, or gambling on commonship in sports.
A lot of nations have this around army drafting.

These people are not hiring executives. I strongly discourage people from putting hobbies or stupid shit like that on resumes. Maybe if you lack any experience, then you can claim you are an active volunteer instructor at your local martial arts venue to add some meat to your resume, but besides that leave it out. It reminds me of the moron who came here asking if he should put how much he can benchlift on his resume.
