Please don't interpret this as financial advice; I'm just a 19-year-old trying to learn more about the stock market.
I was wondering if pic related would be a good company to invest in. Its name is DryShips Inc, and is listed on NASDAQ under the symbol DRYS. Here is a page on Yahoo Finance:

I think it's worth taking a brief look at this press release, dated January 9:

What do you think? Would it be a good idea to buy a bunch of stocks and hold on to them for a few years?

Youre a few months too late, /biz had a DRYS pump and dump.
Or you already know that and this thread will be "1 post by this ID"
You'll be lucky if it doesn't go bankrupt this year...
Dryships is a piece of shit company in a dead industry

Unless global exports pick up significantly very quickly this company will most certainly go bankrupt. If you look at the Baltic Dry index it hasn't gotten any where near 2008 levels and it isn't showing any signs that it will get there any time soon so expect the global shipping industry to stay suppressed. On top of that data for rail cargo was released for the first week of January and it had the weakest numbers in four years. It's just another sign that demand for goods is very low. Unless demand for goods drastically changes really soon this company will very likely file for bankruptcy as it doesn't have the cash to keep operations going for much longer. They already had a cash injection to bail them out will they get another one? I don't know but I would gamble on it.
