I'm well aware that purchasing land in China is very different to the West (1. foreigners can't do it, 2. rural land is owned by collectives and urban land by the State). There's then all the land rights that are lacking

What about for buying stocks? If my Chinese wife buys Chinese stocks will she have strong legal rights regarding those, like buying in a Western democracy?

Stocks have mostly the same protections, but it would be much harder to buy/sell them if you are out of the country.
