Aside from credit rating, is there any benefit to getting a credit card when I don't need one? I could make use of Airpoints but is getting a rewards card worth the cost?
Btw I'm an Ausfag using Westpac.
At least for me Debit and debit/credit combo costs the same, only using credit card costs. And generally I put travel expenses via credit due to automatic insurance (on flight cancellation or whatever) on getting my money back. I even get free travel insurance if I use credit card to pay for 80% of my travel costs.
Though then again, this is bank specific.
There are many credit cards that give cash back with no annual fees.
And credit cards generally have better fraud protection.

that would be nice indeed i have yet to find one in the local offers tho.
there is one i'm looking into that claims the annual fee is redeemable by purchase. which would make it practically zero if i use the card.

if you picked a card with no yearly fee but offers a cash back bonus, this is the simplest way to get 1.5% of your cash back on normal purchases that you can pay off monthly. I stress it only works on things you can pay off monthly or it isn't worth it. Carrying a balance will cancel out the bonus back.
example:
old
500 dollars in bills per month
paid in full
no card: paying bills normally
annual cost: 5,000.00
new
500 dollars in bills per month
paid in full
1.5% cash back credit card
7.50 returned per month
annual cost 4910.00
annual differences: 90 dollars for doing nothing different. Basically a reduction in your bills/costs.
If you spend more per month on fixed costs then it becomes even greater savings, or if you have a card that has a higher % cash back.
Air milage rewards are great if you make use of it otherwise cash back are the better option.

Some things can only be bought by credit card. For example most car rentals only accept CC and quite a few only online shops. Also you can build credit like explained before and loyality programs you might take advantage of.
It's better to have one and don't need it instead of not having one and having to take the first offer when you desperately need one.
I didn't use my CC for almost two years at all, didn't cost me a thing so no problem. But for those few occassions where I did need one it was sure useful.
If you do not care about your credit score, cash back, or other rewards, then there is no point to getting one.

>and quite a few only online shops.
that is why i have a fake cc which is in reality an online prepaid card with no physical plastic just a number.

How do you get one of those?

I do care about cash back, but I can't find any cash back CCards in Aus.

from my bank they are called "webcards"
they attach one to your account for a low fee.
