If I want to be a quant, a real one, not a high paid code monkey, is computer science or math the best major?

and mathematics is equality as important because you need to know the math behind the alorithims

not gonna happen.

why because most quants are math olympiads?

I think the best way to break into this industry is probably by studying math or statistics. A minor in comp sci might be helpful, I'm not sure what type of coding quants do but I would guess maybe Python, R, or SQL or some combination. SQL and R are actually pretty easy to pick up on your own, I don't know anything about Python.

No matter what you do though, the real game changer on your resume is going to be networking. I would recommend getting involved in whatever business/investment groups your school has. You can probably find one that interests you. You'll be able to make friends and if it's an active group you can have some of those things on your resume. Don't shy away from taking the lead on some things the group does.

I emphasize the networking because those types of things generally stand out way more to employers.

Also, try not to think of it as networking, you're just making like minded friends and giving yourself something to do. If your intentions are positive this will reflect.

I feel like professors and smug people who give TED talks really overplay this Machiavellian theme behind networking and how you should be using it to leverage those contacts to your advantage. I'm not saying that's not what you'll do with your network, because it is, but if you make genuine friends they genuinely want to help and you'll genuinely want to help them. That's what networking really is.

I hope this makes sense..

if you have to come here to ask such a question, trust me, you are not smart enough to be a quant

Math of course. But why would you want to be a quant?
