Academia feels like such a fucking stupid circlejerk, is being a carpenter a valid alternative? This is coming from someone about to graduate with a Math/CS degree. I'm also considering continuing onto grad school, or just pimping out my programming portfolio.
IDFK help me lads, grades are shit btw but I can get up to a 3.5 before transferring to uni (I'm in community college rn)

Learn the trade. Academia is fucked and no longer generates useful grads. One of the big 4 just confirmed degrees offer no benefit to their staff intake.

so carpentry in the summer, programming in the winter it is
sounds comfy I guess
I have an accounting degree but I ended up becoming an electrician after I realized that I hate corporate/office work. It was the best decision I have ever made in my life.

I'm sure. Confirmation bias has nothing to do with this...

Why don't you want to try to get a CS job?

too stupid.
Electricians are more in demand, really. Plumbers too. Carpentry is hardly essential in difficult times. Dentistry is interesting, mind. Toothache is toothache, no matter what else is going on in the world! And you can virtually move anywhere and set up shop.

This. Go for electrician or elevator technician/installer. They are the highest paid tradesmen in the industry. Easy six figures within five years. Apprentices start at 50% to 60% of Journeyman's salary with full benefits.

Trades are shit long term (trades related to home construction, especially, suffer during winter months), but, you'll never be hungry as long as you're willing to work. Also, if you make connections among fellow tradesmen, you can count on the loyalty you could have expected from unions back in the good old days.
Yeah, there's a lot of shit heads, but most people in the trades understand the importance of banding together.
