What's a good amount to start trading at? do you need to save up a large amount and then go in, or is it best to just start even with something like 1k. Complete pleb here.

If you have less then $25,000,000, just give up now.

1k is fine, you won't make enough to live off of. 5k gets you into futures trading and if you have like a year of experience making money that will make you rich because of the 1-50x leverage.
25k get's you into normal day trading range. that can make you lots of money too

Actually I plan to day trade in my long-term investments, so I mainly see it as a learning experience rather than an attempt to make a lot of money.

More money means it's easier to diversify & still profit. For example:
If I have 1k, I invest it into 5 stocks, $200 each, the stocks go up an average of 20% because I'm a badass, Each stock makes me $40 return. Now my brokerage on that small trade will be minimum $16 ($8 in - $8 out), I make $24 profit per trade before taxes.
Now I have 10k, I do the exact same thing, 5 stocks, except I'm terrible at stocks, I only make 5% return because I'm totally fucking retarded. That return is $100 per trade, minus $16 brokerage, I make $84 per trade before taxes.
In situation b I am 4 times less efficient as the guy in situation a, But I make more money overall, and less of my profits as a % is spent on fees. Now in situation a, you probably wouldn't diversify because brokerage will fuck you, you'd go all in on 1 stock, this increases your risk massively.
