How the fuck does Bitcoin shorting work? With regular stocks your ownership is pretty much virtual in the brokerage so they can borrow your stuff without you knowing but with crypto you actually need fucking private keys to authorize such a loan.

essentially this exchanges still work like that with pooled accounts holding all the coins
but also to loan your stuff through the exchanges you have to volunteer for it, you get 0.1% or 1% interest or something from doing it
thus in exchanges like bitfinex you can only borrow what's available to borrow from people loaning it out
