Hi. I need help understanding the pattern day trader time limit. I understand that the day trades have to be 4 or less in 5 business days, but I'm confused as to how to keep track of the days.
If I did some day trades on 1/3 this means that the 5 days goes Monday 1/9 before the days are reset right? However what if I did trades on 1/3, but then did some on Thursday and Friday of that week. Does that 5 day period extend starting with that Friday or what? Getting confused here. Help please.

also tried to illustrate in pic related what im thinking
First of, they have to be 3 or less. >=4 is a day trader and your broker will want that 25000 marginable equity.

oh i read that too
Please
Please help

It's any 4 trades in any 5 day period.
There is no "reset".
You're really better off getting the $25K together to avoid the rule entirely. Your odds are much worse otherwise, and you'll wind up making your decisions based on an arbitrary factor (like which day of the week it is), which is suicide.

Day 1- 2 trades
Day 2- 0
Day 3- 1
Day 4- 1
Day 5- 0
Day 6- Now I have 4 day trades again right?
Day 1- 2 trades
Day 2- 0
Day 3- 0
Day 4- 1
Day 5- 0
Day 6- So I only did 3 day trades in the prior 5 days, on this 6 day do I have 4 available?
Sorry , I know I sound dumb

>Day 6- Now I have 4 day trades again right?
No, you have one, as your two trades on days 3 and 4 count. If you make two on day 6, you just went over, because the five day period that started on your "day 3" just hit 4 trades.

>Day 6- So I only did 3 day trades in the prior 5 days, on this 6 day do I have 4 available?
You have two. The five day period that began on your "day 2" will exceed the rule if you make 3 trades on your "day 6", because of your trade on "day 4"

So by your example does it have to be consecutive days making day trades or just 5 business days?
Day 1- 2 trades
Day 2- 1
Day 3- 0
Day 4- 1
Day 5- 0
Is this a day trader?

>just 5 business days?
Yes.
And yes, he triggered the rule on day 4.

Thanks for your help, appreciate it. Just one more question.
Day 1- 2 trades
Day 2- 0
Day 3- 0
Day 4- 1
Day 5- 0
Day 6- Am I good to do up to 3 trades? Since its like day "1" again since 5 days passed?

>Am I good to do up to 3 trades
Two trades, but not three. It's true the five days you listed won't trigger the rule, but 3 trades on your "day 6" would be day 5 of the 5 day period starting on your "day 2". That plus your trade on day 4 would screw you.
But seriously, re-read this >>1708505
post, because what you're describing is a terrible way to trade.
