I took three years of accounting in hopes of starting a business.

I've managed a bunch of companies and started a couple of my own. Still haven't used any of that accounting education though. They have this cool new thing called accounting software. Even that's overkill for most businesses.

understanding that is something I learned in home ec class in 7th grade, not accounting. Most businesses are less nuanced and complex than your average household budget.
