Write down your goal in 700 words. Come back and read it in 24 hours, if you still feel like your OP pic, then do this:

I'm going to let you in on the secret.
Drink water. A litre every 2-3 hours at least.
Set a time to do just a little bit of work on it. Every day. 10 minutes. If you work longer, great.
If not, don't stress about it.

Oh, I almost forgot: look up the careers of people who have done similar things to your goal, see their patterns.

6 months in when you know EVERYTHING about your topic, start contacting random experts in the field, like the LinkedIn ones you mentioned perhaps, and start asking them intelligent, penetrating questions that provoke discussion.

Maybe start a blog of your own at that point, "personal branding" your exertise

Haha I guess it wouldn't matter what I'm doing since I'm not tapping into some secret tiny niche.

I want to gain admittance into a cutting edge multimedia design graduate program at MIT. I love the work done by multiple professors in the department and they teach exactly what I want to develop in order to create my own product in the future.

See if you can get into contact with students currently in the program. Also see if you can do any short courses on campus, more often than not the selection panels for these kinds of schools want like-minded individuals, they have a very specific idea of the kind of student they want. The student doesn't need to be an expert in the field (it's interesting, they say they assume you know nothing so they can mold you into their image, but also expect you already have intermediate skills... annoying)
