>Apply for self employment
>Suddenly get a bill for £534.80 for outstanding national insurance payments
>Dates are between 2011-2015
I have only been self employed and subcontracting for 2 months this year. Between 2011-2015 I have either been in education, or employed - and my employer paid the NI.
Have HM Revenue and Customs made a mistake? What do I do? I cannot afford this.
Phone them up and explain.
They are surprisingly helpful over the phone.

You do realise that individuals also pay NI?
But anyway, it should be deducted from your pay packet, so I'm surprised you owe anything.

The computers send that shit out automatically. Phone them up, get a human to look at your file, and they'll tell you what to do.
