The reason why they arent more popular is that books are not status symbols anymore.

Plenty of "art" books already are. It's not strange to see them $200-1000 for one volume. But you can't show off books unless you have a nice house to put them in, and friends you can let in your house.

They are a thing.
And they are a decent investment too, especially the photography ones.

Shit like SUMO by Helmut Newton.

And usually any oversized book a well known contemporary photographer like Araki, McCurry, Webb etc
