Having lived in Europe extensively, I think I can be of some help here. The US has a much larger income disparity than in Europe, which is part of what you are seeing. If you are a college educated white middle or upper class person, you will likely have a far better lifestyle in the US than you would in Europe. Wages for professional-level positions are MUCH higher in the US. However, those lower on the income scale are worse off in the US than they would be in some parts of Europe.

For example, when I lived in the UK, I saw many management level positions that were paying 20-30k. Those same positions in the US would likely pay twice as much. However, the average McDonalds worker was making more because they had subsidized healthcare and more social benefits.

The price that Europe pays for having a smaller income gap is that successful, educated people (including much of the middle class) have far less opportunity for advancement.

Additionally, the cost of living is much lower in the US due to a number of factors including the availability of land/resources, the fact that many goods are manufactured here/companies based here, etc.
